If you have followed our posts, you are aware that we structure our "lives à la carte". This simply means, we like to adhere to what suits us best, when it comes to housing, shopping, eating, traveling, etc. We select what fits our needs and requirements.
This is all based on our core values. It may not be to everyone's liking, but as we see it life is a buffet, a banquet of possibilities! Just because it is one of the choices, we do not have to choose it! We choose what we like, and do not focus nor campaign on what we do not like!!
And the same goes for the Internet!
One of my first exposures to the Internet was through my parents. My mother was a food research librarian throughout her career at several large publicly traded firms.
She worked with the various scientists who needed trade publications and tomes of books. When the Internet came along, they signed up for the feeds. It was not free, the company paid for the time that was used.
In commercial real estate, office buildings were selected based on their having internet lines for law offices and research firms. Office buildings responded and installed the latest and greatest available for data connective (T1 lines, before Wi Fi). This was the new must-have requirement for certain professionals.
The same was true for the legal profession. Legal libraries were still part of the requirement of space for law firm office (when looking for office space). They also needed data connectivity .
Instead of waiting for the monthly publications to arrive, the scientists and attorneys could access current information faster. It was definitely a cost cutter. Trade publications and books were more expensive than the dollars spent researching on line.
Thanks to Ron's keen interest in tech, we were one of the first offices to adopt the Internet. And the building we were in had a. T 1 line. He loved Bill Gates book title, Business at the Speed of Thought.
We joined a former client in his endeavors with a philanthropic firm called Earth Spirit. We loved how we could communicate instantly with each other on projects and be part of the Heal the Bay (the Santa Monica Bay).
It was magical. That project morphed into our company adopting an entire school district, and community. The focus was to bring awareness to keeping our ocean water clean, and heal the Bay. It was a success!
In our current business, we were the first to encourage our client in Napa to install the IDX, and maximize her web site which we jointly created. Not long ago, when she retired, she was able to sell her site and her brand for six figures...not bad?
Today, we have panoramic Wi-Fi in our office. It is the fastest speed that our provider has. We are still enchanted by business at the speed of thought! We love the research we have at our fingertips, and we both are researchers.
We checked out and researched all aspects of the Internet as it has evolved. And like a banquet/buffet, there are aspects we love and aspects we do not. And we focus and use what we like and ignore the rest.
We stick to our values on this subject too. Did we lose anything? No, we did not, we gained so much! And we love it.
I could go on, and on...but the call to Portugal (free) to my niece and her husband (they just moved from rainy London) is coming up on Zoom. OOPs, we had to switch to Face time, Zoom did not work.
Lunch on our deck is next, and then our tide table says: Beach Time!
Life à la Carte suit us perfectly!
This is an entry into the January Challenge hosted by Kathleen Daniels and Gary Frimann. Thank you Kathleen and Gary.
