Martin Luther King Jr., the man behind the legacy of fighting the racial inequality in the country, has been an inspiration to many of us. And this Monday, January 17, is the MLK Day, and is worth celebrating. So here are five ways you can celebrate the MLK Day next week!
1. Watch the historic "I Have a Dream" speech on YouTube
One of the ways to relive the the history is to go digital. Luckily, the "I have a Dream" speech is on YouTube! Check out the video below or follow this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vP4iY1TtS3s
2. Read books about MLK and His Advocacy
Not only that MLK is a historic icon, he's also a graet writer. All the more reasons to have other people get inspired by his works and achievements. You may try reading some of his books below in line with the holiday:
- Why We Can't Wait
- Strength to Love
- Where Do We Go from Here
3. Visit the National Museum of African American History and Culture in DC
A lot of MLK's advocacies is about getting equal civil rights for everyone. For all of the things that the African American community are fighting for, MLK has been an inspiration to continue the fight and get to where we are at today. It's time to look back at history and see how it was, to reignite the passion for equality and stop racism once and for all. You may visit the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, DC next week by going to this website: https://nmaahc.si.edu/
4. Join Local Peace Walks
Due to the pandemic, we may find ourselves in limited places to be in. The yearly walk to the Washington Monument may not be an option to some, which is why it is a great idea to host or join a peace walk in the community. Not only that you are celebrating MLK's life and legacy, you're also limiting the spread of the pandemic, which is better for everyone.
5. Watch Kid-Friendly Movies Inspired by MLK's Advocacies
Not the reading, museum, or the walk-around-the-neighborhood type? I got you covered! You can still participate and celebrate MLK day by watching some movies with the kids and family and still spread awareness and learn from them. Here are some recommendations that I have:
- The Journey of Henry Box Brown (2005)
- 42 (2013)
- A Ballerina's Tale (2015)
And that is it for our top 5 list today. How are you planning to celebrate the Martin Luther King Jr. Day next week? Let me know in the comments below!
