As I say the further away you get from the City of Detroit the lower the crime rates will be. As everybody knows low income cities and cities with higher poverty rates have higher crime. One of the reasons is the residents have very little money and crime is an easy way to get more money, a car, or stuff. Most of the first ring of cities around the City of Detroit will have a little higher crime rates. But when you get to the second ring of communities the crime usually drops even more.
Let's talk about three safe cities near Detroit. Let's talk about
Royal Oak is in the 71st percentile for safety, meaning 29% of cities are safer and 71% of cities are more dangerous. See the table on nearby places below for nearby cities. The rate of crime in Royal Oak is 19.45 per 1,000 residents during a standard year. Over the years Royal Oak has been on a few safest city lists. Royal Oak has been ranked at the 27th safest place to live in Michigan, according the the real estate site, Movoto.
I think that is really good considering where Royal Oak is located and how many people come to Royal Oak that do not live there. If you do not know Royal Oak has a great downtown area. Full of shops, boutique type stores, bars, restaurants, and coffee shops. They have a few condo complexes right in the downtown area and many local residents walk to the downtown area for coffee, dinner, or a drink. You will see people walking around the downtown area. A good police presence helps keeps crime to a minimum. The other reason I say it is so good that the crime is low is sometimes when there is easy high access to Royal Oak. Criminals like easy highway access so they can do there crime and get away fast. That does not seem like it happens in Royal Oak luckily.
How safe is Clarkston Michigan
It is a safe community to live in. You are going to find that the surrounding communities are very safe too. They are some what rural. Many of the homes sit on bigger lots and acreage. There are farms and woods all around Clarkston. I would call the surrounding communities more rural. You are going to have to travel a ways to shop, or go out to eat sometimes. The area is not urban in most senses. You may have to travel to Great Lake Crossing and all the shopping off Baldwin Road to satisfy your shopping itch.
So let's talk about how safe Clarkston is.
The rate of crime in Clarkston is 16.03 per 1,000 residents during a standard year. Village of Clarkston is safer than the Michigan state average and safer than the national average.

Is Franklin Michigan a safe place to live?
Franklin Michigan is a very safe community. I would say that it is only affected by random crime. What I mean by that is there is no active criminal element roaming or controlling the city. You are going to have random crime such as vandalism by younger kids, and crimes of opportunity when you leave your car unlocked. You are not going to have gangs doing home invasions, getting car jacked going down any of the streets in the city. It is just not a rampant crime city. Sometimes the crimes occur because of family or friend disputes.
You do not have the mafia shaking down local businesses, or cartels selling dope on the street. You do not have street gangs running the streets. No burnt out drug dens, or rapes happening all the time. No drive by shooting or any of that. It is a very safe community to live in. I would recommend Franklin MI to any Michigan relocation client. It is a great place to call home.
Franklin is a suburb of Detroit with a population of over 3,000. Living in Franklin offers residents a "up north" feel and most residents own their homes. The residents tend to lean conservative.
Here is what some of the other websites have to say about how safe Franklin is. There is a wide variance on how safe they say Franklin is. They all say it is safe, but some have higher rankings for Franklin than others.
Franklin is in the 73rd percentile for safety, meaning 27% of cities are safer and 73% of cities are more dangerous. The rate of violent crime in Franklin is lower than 73% of US cities. The same site a year earlier gave Franklin an A+ grade. That means the rate of crime is much lower than the average US city.
