"Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg held a press conference to announce that if you post one more picture of your cat sleeping, they're going to delete your account." –Jimmy Kimmel

Why do we laugh at the movies like "9 To 5" or shows like "The Office?" Humor in the workplace is not new, humor is serious, and numerous studies have demonstrated its importance in sustaining productivity and morale.

Is it even necessary to promote humor in your work life? And if that's your goal, how do you do it without sounding like you're implementing a new IT security measure?

According to the Penn Behavior Health Paper, humor promotes a healthy environment. The appropriate use of humor can enhance relationships, rapport, cooperation, influence, and team development.

Sales: "Oh, No! She's trying to sell me something!"

A salesperson with an upbeat personality is an asset in any business and work environment. This is in contrast to the deadly serious, or worse, the pushy salesperson focused only on closing the deal.

"There are worse things in life than death. Have you ever spent an evening with an insurance salesman?" – Woody Allen

Public Relations:  "What's in it for me?"

Humor can be an engaging, attractive, valuable asset in your promotional efforts. Your personality is reflected in your several forms of public relations. Trite but true, people want to get to know the person, not a company. And a witty person is more approachable and likable than a deadly serious one. We all like to do business with someone we like.

Blogs, posts, tweets, images on Facebook, ActiveRain, and other social media become your business persona. Readers learn who you are and decide whether to contact you, and humor is one of the best ways to make you approachable.

Humor can help your business stand out from the crowd. A good joke, a silly mascot, a good taste of self-predication, and a touch of humor on your brand's YouTube video all can make your online marketing "go viral."

"My mother always used to say: The older you get, the better you get, unless you're a banana." —Rose (Betty White), The Golden Girls

Training:  "It's worse than teaching an old dog new tricks!"

Whether attempting to educate new clients on selling and buying a home or training new agents to do their jobs, humor aids the process. Why? Viewers of the satirical Colbert Report know far more about PACs and campaign finance, fairly dense subject matter than some viewers of cable news. It is easier to learn when the information is presented with humor.

The human race has one really effective weapon, and that is laughter. --Mark Twain

Management:  "Should we trust them?"

An office's tone flows "from the top." Cultivate a culture of humor in your office with the right props. Relax. Enjoy the humor in your workday. You, your team members and, your clients will all react positively.

Humor can help your business as an entity and individual, whether you're new or seasoned professionals.

"What soap is to the body, laughter is to the soul. Laughter is the shortest distance between two people."--Victor Borge

"Okay, Where's The Beef?"

Here are five specific ways a sense of humor can help your work life and your bottom line:

  1. Be approachable. Make people feel more comfortable and at ease to seek you out and enjoy working with you. Humor humanizes you.
  2. Be a stress-buster. Be energized. Don't panic. Everyone feels safe and more at ease with leaders who can humor to handle stress.
  3. Get a perspective on the problem. Don't blame. Ask probing questions. Solve the problem with ease, making progress in stressful situations.
  4. Allow humor for a different "angle" on the subject. Each new angle is an option for another view, vision, or insight.
  5. Morale feeds humor. When sales slow and new listings lag, inject some funny "haha" moments, some surprises. Don't let morale be damped or doomed by gloom. Share humorous success or failure stories. Have fun with it!

Humor is infectious. The sound of laughter is contagious. They strengthen your immune system, boost your energy and help get people over "rough spots." Waves of laughter work better together. The office becomes innovative and efficient.

"I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you make them feel." – Dr. Maya Angelou

Humor can help!

So true, Kathy Streib; we need to feel comfortable with self-predicating. This way, nobody gets offended. When I sense someone has no sense of humor, I make fun of myself, especially when speaking in front of a group of people I never met before.

Ed Silva: Having humor in a relationship is almost a prerequisite for happiness. Here's a piece of fun advice from the guy we know but never met:

  2. Here's to the lucky couple! 🥂

Hi, Paddy Deighan MBA JD PhD; Kudos to you for utilizing humor and being effective with teenagers and sales. For me, my teenager used humor on me when she wanted something from me. And she was good at it. :)

There are times I seek things out to laugh at.  Humor for the Tumor. I love to laugh.

The Big Bang Theory, even the re-runs always offers me comedic relief.

Laughing beats crying. I've been known to do both at the same time ... laughing at myself for crying Aura Alex

Kathleen Daniels, Probate & Trust Specialist Sometimes, it's hard to find humor when we're terrified of uncertainty. Tears would run down my face when I sang along to the American National Anthem (which lasted for a few years after my American citizenship). A particular experience sometimes brings out certain emotions we can't fathom. I, too, laugh and cry at the same time when I realize nothing is going to change tomorrow; I laugh at my thought of what would happen if I were to continue to cry alone and had to show up in a Zoom meeting (in a few hours) with puffy eyes and no make-up!

I lived with someone who lives with Alzheimer's, so it's every day's effort to see the humor in finding a cereal box in the refrigerator when his reason to put it there was to keep the sweet cereal from ants (and this was during winter!) 😂

Aura I am always cracking jokes and laughing and the clients love it, it is always self depreciating but entertaining... now with that said it breaks the stress when you are negotiating multi million dollar listings.... at the same time I do the same with under one hundred k listings too because the people that are buying it to them it is still a lot of money, Endre

Endre Barath, Jr. , I have known that you have a wonderful sense of humor for quite some time, and I spotted that from the very beginning when I met you online. And our Boston connection. Your clients are lucky to have you!

If I could find a house under $1M, moving to the LA area might entice me. Did I hear you could buy a garage alone (no house attached ) for under $1M in LA? Would a roof come with it? LOL!🤣

Aura Alex - you reminded me that I have book on how a woman can run a business with humor... I need to find it! As for the photo of the car in the roof, it reminds me of a listing I had. The house was odd with a spiral staircase in the middle of the Living Room and a tree growing through the roof of the garage! I asked the Seller if he was going to have the tree removed and he said he couldn't because of the Town Tree Ordinance based on the age of the tree! The house sold and went under contract in 3 days! Yes! It sold for a lot more than list price in 2015. Coincidentally, I was checking the stats in MLS this morning and noticed the buyers who bought it just sold the property on the 10th of January. It sold for more than double of what they paid!

Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP; it's hilarious that the house would be sold and re-sold again with the tree growing through the roof of the garage. I'm sure that their cars had benefited from the permanent shades! It takes all kinds! LOL!  How could you keep a straight face through the entire transaction? Thank you for a laugh!! 😂

Aura Alex - When I looked at the photos in MLS I didn't see any interior changes in paint, flooring, or additional improvements. But they did paint the exterior of the home which was a smart idea. It was ORANGE when I sold it previously and they painted it a light gray which looked beautiful! But the tree remained "AS IS!" Perhaps whoever bought it loved the tree???

When I had to share a lot of my business with a colleague during cancer treatment, I often told my clients - "you're going to love her!   she's just like me, only funnier."    I love & envy those who have such a sharp wit that they can crack a joke at anything - people blessed with that talent make all of our lives so much more fun.

Hi, M.C. Dwyer; thank you for your comment. I agree with you that humor gets us through work and life challenges. I had a 95-year-old client who everyone said was difficult. I found out that he enjoyed witty repartees, and his profound & dry sense of humor resonated with me forever. He has passed away earlier this year, and every time I think of him, I smile! 😃
