Education & Training with Performance Development Strategies

Everyone knows about the supply chain difficulty and many know about the workforce shortage that has resulted from the great resignation.

What started as supposed temporary shutdown has now grown into an entirely new set of workforce preferences.  As real estate agents you have heard first hand of the preferences in finding a home today.  A home office is very high on the list.

How are the employers handling this.  I work with them and I can tell you they are scrambling.

Employers are now seeing that it is time to stop thinking or temporary measures or to expect people to come and and resume as they did in 2019.

I co chair the HR Council at the Business Council of Westchester and we have two speakers tomorrow who are going to tackle the challenge and share best practices.  This online webinar is highly subscribed because companies want answers.

We have someone from the department of labor.  He will give us the current workforce statistics.  We have a corporate HR Director.  She will share how she has make adjustment to workforce think and has established new best practices.

I am sure I will have many more practices to share after this presentation.

Nina - we had a very lively presentation and discussion.

Brian - the answer to that is yes they are in addition to offering some sign on bonuses.

Bill - don't know why either.

Wayne - yes, not a lot of assurance there but business has to take the lead.

Michael - all of that and more.  Creative thinking and options are important.

Norma - yes, it is time to create the path and move forward instead of waiting.

Ed - one topic mentioned was talk to each employee.  See what works for them.

Larry and Sheila - yes they are all over.

Joan - lowest since the pandemic has started.

George - what is even more important is that company plans are adjusting.

Hi Grant, the times have changed. My son is a good example, he changed jobs in 2020 and hadn't met most of his co-workers face-to-face until recently. He works from home and loves it most of the time.  He says there are aspects of it that are difficult. For example, because they have children, hearing chaos beyond his closed door is often tough to ignore. And, he misses seeing people in person. According to Nate, working from home most days with a twice monthly in-person would be about right.

Hi Grant Schneider - My first career was in the staffing industry.  I supplied warehouses with whole shifts of people in and around the Ontario Airport.  I can't even imagine what it is like in that industry now.  

I am thinking that you have defined your mission for 2022 in this new age of employment - helping businesses navigate this employment dilemma.  States with mandates like NY are probably more challenging. You are the right person to help these businesses.  I wish you much success in 2022.

What an exciting challenge to tackle this ever growing problem in the workforce..can't wait to hear what comes out of meeting. Humans need human contact. There is nothing like learning from seeing peoples eyes, mannerism's and face to face contact. It's easy to fall into a less productive way of handling business when you are always alone and don't feel the synergy of other people.

Dear Grant,

Tell us, what you find out. Seems to me that people are now demanding the work-life balance that many other countries already have.

Parental leave for both parents taken at different times (future employees have come from somewhere, eh?).

Flexible work schedules letting young parents drop off & pick up their short people, when needed and making up the rest of the workday, when they are in bed.

Flexible work times to accommodate other interests in the arts, sports, etc.

Flexible work schedules to allow for more travel or continuing education (sabbatical-style).

More agency over their work (being appreciated for their ideas instead of their automaton qualities - maybe we can build robots for that).

Making work more human will benefit us all.

Joan - I know that agents have not gone to the office for a while.

Dorie - as a former teacher you know that some of these things have to be in person.  One comment from the HR Director was talk to you employees and thing of them as individuals.

Dorte - those are all good ideas.  Treat employees as individuals and ask each one.
