How BIG Is The Oven?

By

While reading "NORTH DAKOTA LIVING", a publication put out by local cooperatives I came across this article:

The Dave Muehler family (Dave, Wanda, and adult son Matt) raise 40 pound turkeys! WOW, how big is your oven and how many people will be sitting around your dining table?

The Muehlers produce 80,000 of those 40 pound turkeys a year and sell them all to Jennie-O in Willmar MN. None of these birds end up as Thanksgiving diners... Jennie-O uses them manufacturing products such as turkey ham, bologna, salami, pastrami, bacon, breakfast sausage and hot dogs.

I'm still imagining one big bird on someone's table. The left overs would surly last a whole year.

I had not thought about a barrel smoker Raymond Henson, eXp Realty but if it would fit that would be a great way to cook it.

Bob,

I can't even fathom the idea of a 40 pound turkey.  We usually get a half of a turkey breast for dinner every other month, and It last two days.  A

This sent me in a different direction than everyone else.

I immediately wonder what they are putting in these birds to achieve that weight (growth hormones for example) and wonder if the meat is less healthy for human consumption than that of smaller birds.

It is interesting that turkey meat is probably the healthiest ingredient in those products you listed and now I question even that. LOL

Ron and Alexandra Seigel , I know! A half a breast feeds the three of us and as you know that includes a 20 year old young man (Timmothy). 😃

That is an interesting view Sharon Tara . I will have to revisit the article and see if there are any clues/answers to your questions.

That would be 10 pounds each (of just turkey) for our family ( Tony Busanich ) . If that bird was frozen at the store I wonder how long it woud take to thaw and cook?

Hi Bob- the 22 pound turkey we had at Thanksgiving barely fit in our oven. And I too wondered as did Sharon Tara what they did to them or put into them to make so much larger.

Bob, for a single person, could I just put an order in for a thigh please?   With 40#, I would have leftover turkey for a year!

Sharon Tara had a great point Kathy Streib and as she stated a lot of us think of turkey as a very heathy meat. Let's hope it's just very successful breading and nothing else.

Joan Cox a thigh from one of these birds might be a diner for two on it's own. 😃

I doubt any home has that large of an oven unless it is in a chiefs home that comes home from work and likes to feed the neighborhood Endre Barath, Jr.  😄.

Dear Bob,

All animals grow bigger in the north, but I am guessing this is a special breed grown especially for the commercial uses you indicated.
