The Power of High-Contrast Paint Colors
Staging your home when preparing it for sale is one of the most vital tasks. According to the National Association of Realtors, 82% of buyers’ agents say home staging makes it simpler for buyers to picture themselves living in the home. So, the best way to freshen up your home is to give it a fresh coat of paint.
Many real estate agents recommend keeping your home neutral with beige and white colors. This is still sound advice, as it keeps the pool of interested buyers big. However, if you’re feeling like accentuating the home’s character just a little more, you can also use a more modern method to make the home feel more inviting.
When incorporated in the right way, high contrast can introduce an amazing level of appeal to prospective buyers. Here’s why.
Why You Should Use High-Contrast Paint Colors
High-contrast paint can have a dramatic and breathtaking effect. Creating the right balance between light and bold colors is the simplest way to create a space with a memorable impact at first glance. The use of light and dark colors introduces a timeless look and carries a balance throughout your home.
With high-contrast colors, you also create a dynamic composition. Contrast creates visual interest in interior design. So, when you create a bold space, you can make it feel inviting with optical power.
Here are some ways you can implement contrast within your living quarters.
High-Contrast Paint Color Tips
1. Give Your Kitchen a Small Pop of Color
High-contrast kitchen wall colors for home staging are the ones that bring a smile to your face. One way of adding charm without being too adventurous is to have the classic black and white with a light shade of blue or pink. Consider adding black trim and white walls, and painting the cabinets and cupboards with an airy color.
Placing black with any variation of color can be tricky, though. One thing to consider is avoiding saturated colors such as bright blue or hot pink. This will ensure you keep everything slightly neutral while maintaining a future sale for your home.
2. Create an Earthy Home Environment
Mix it up with a black accent wall and incorporate brown accents. Together, black and brown create a modern, moody look. Another way you can include this is by using brown accent materials to create a textured look.
For instance, wooden tables with black paint and white furniture implement an eclectic aesthetic. To keep things lively, add some greenery into the mix with plants to make the entire scheme pop.
3. Add Visual Interest With Architectural Features
Take advantage of home staging if you plan on adding interesting architectural elements to your home. For example, making transformations with large-paneled windows and detailed moldings can offer a dramatic effect.
Paint them with high-contrast colors instead of adding a new color to the walls. This can help them stand out more and create an enhanced appearance for potential buyers. Consider adding a black trim or a bold electric blue color to the window for a modern look.
4. Make a First Impression Through Curb Appeal
Research shows that homeowners can receive up to a 51% return on investment with a new coat of exterior paint. Highlight your home’s architectural features with black siding, white trim, and a pop of color on the front door.
Adding a bright aqua blue or yellow hue to the front can catch the eyes of prospective home buyers. Painting a bright color on the front door is exciting and adds an element of brightness when paired with black-ink siding and a metal roof.
5. Capture Powerful Energy With Bold Red-Orange and Black
You can make the bedroom feel approachable by setting it up with a dynamic visual scheme. So, if you’re feeling adventurous, black and red-orange set the stage for brightness in color. However, the combination of the two colors can feel intimidating.
To downplay the intensity, use white walls as a buffer between them. Using the trio in equal doses can result in energy yet offer an invitational appeal.
6. Dramatize Neutrals Using Charcoal
Black may not always be the choice of color for many homeowners. Sometimes, it’s easier to go neutral and create high contrast with dark-grey colors. Charcoal tones can provide depth when painting an accent wall, and it conceals shadows by replacing them with a serene feeling.
Charcoal is one of the best dark neutral colors. It can raise the stylish factor within a room when you complement it with beige and orange wooden hues. The color also works well with brightly lit rooms—and in smaller spaces when you want to feature an architectural design.
Making a High-Contrast Statement in Your Home Staging
Whether you go bold or decide to keep it neutral, you can make a lasting impact on home buying appeal with high contrast paint colors. To ensure you make a quick sale, consider one of these tips for interior appeal enhancements. Home staging is worth the total return on investment and can be useful for wow-ing many prospective buyers.

Norma J. Elkins - This is a great education on contrasting paint colors! It's so important to listen to the experts instead of winging it with pretty colors that may prove to be disappointing if they don't contrast. Bravo! I learned a lot, thanks to you!

Hi Norma... I'm much more of a neutral paint person. My pop of color is a brilliant red with a gold wash over it in my dining room. My office was a pumpkin orange, but I recently painted it very pale neutral... after 15 years felt like I needed a lighter atmosphere in my work space. But I do like my pops of color in my handbags!
