I highly doubt that I will ever write a book and I don't believe my life is worthy of a book but I do feel like I am living a very good life! For this February challenge hosted by Carol Williams and Anna Banana Kruchten CRS, Phoenix Broker I figured that I would write about my childhood. I feel that I had a very good upbringing that was influenced by many, most importantly my parents.
I was born in Oxford, England while my Dad was in the Air Force and my Mom was teaching. I don't remember anything from my time in England other than what I see in pictures of me as a baby, haha. I think we were only there for a year before moving back to the United States. I think we first lived in California for a while, then Tucson but I don't recall any of that. My earliest memories begin when I was 5 years old and we moved to a small town around 100 miles outside of the Phoenix Metro area in Arizona. It was a small town of around 6,000 people and the town where my Mom was born and raised.
My Mom was one of 10 kids so growing up I got to spend a lot of time with my grandparents, aunts, and uncles so family time has always been valuable to me. Gatherings for Christmas and Thanksgiving were always so much fun at Grandma's house! I attended a local Catholic school that my Grandpa helped build and my Grandma volunteered at. I was given a very good education from the Nuns that taught at the school and feel that they instilled in me the values that have shaped my life in a very good way.
I remember how much I loved playing basketball and it seemed that I always had a basketball with me and I practiced every chance I got. My Mom was a teacher at the local high school so she was able to introduce me to the basketball players. I was a big fan so she made me my own uniform and I got to hang around with the team and sit at the end of the bench. I remember loving the games so much and cheering on the team from the bench. In high school, I had a rude awakening since I was a scrawny little guy and even though I was the best shooter on the team the coach wanted big strong athletes on the court, haha. I continued to sit at the end of the bench and didn't enjoy the games as much as I did when I was younger and sitting at the end of the bench. So, I quit basketball and took up golf for my final two years of high school. I got pretty good and even made the all-state team my senior year of high school.
That was a fun experience and lead to a love of golf for a while. Once I got into the working world though, I found that golf was expensive and took too much time, so I eventually gave it up as well. Perhaps one day I will take it back up again and enjoy it just as much as I used to. Well, hopefully, I am at my 500-word quota for the challenge since I am getting tired of writing about myself, haha.
