Food For Thought: The Value Of Life—How Much Are You Worth?

By
Services for Real Estate Pros Retired

"The major value in life is not what you get. The principal value in life is what you become." — Jim Rohn.

As adolescents, the world tells us our worth and teaches us what we should value through the people we grew up around, the media, and culture.

But when you have so many voices in your ears uttering stronger than your thoughts, your own beliefs and priorities can receive a second place to the values of others.

As we grow into our teenage years, we're instructed on which courses to take in high school to graduate at the top of our class and get accepted to the best colleges. A diploma and a high-paying career are praised to the moon and back.

But what happens to the people who want to take a break after high school to explore the world and decide how to spend their lives? They are lost or uneducated—are they?

Unfortunately, the lost and uneducated lose value in the societal eye.

But what if that's not the case? Is it possible that the people who took the time to find themselves are the ones who know their worth? They know a job or a degree does not define them. They can see the value of life experiences and feel comfortable in their skin.

The title you wear, your possessions, and the amount of money in your account do not have any value until you define them. And once you do, others will too.

Many have followed the same path. They know your hardships and have emerged to the other end, knowing their worth.

"Don't give up the journey to finding your worth, for it is a lifelong adventure with endless rewards."

The next time you question your worth, remember that the people who love you will do it unconditionally, and those who don't see your value may never—despite how hard you try to show it to them.

It's all about the situations you choose. In the end, you have the power to decide your worth, and it's your responsibility to find the value of your life and how others will value you.

So, ask yourself these questions: "What is the value of your life? How can others value you?" The answer lies within you.

"Self-worth comes from one thing—thinking that you are worthy."—Wayne Dyer.

Everyone has worth and it makes me sad when I come upon someone with low self-esteem.  I always want to try and show them how amazing they are!  We all have different gifts and talents, sometimes it just takes a person a little longer to discover what they are, haha.

I think that when you finish high school, you should give back, take a year to visit the national forests, walk in the woods and get to know yourself.  After a year you may find that you don't want to go to college.  I would love to see everyone give a year of service to this country we live in, to learn how good we have it, and appreciate all that we have been given.

I think it is honorable to serve our great country. I believe there's never too late to "give." Perhaps in some other ways.

I do not "think" I am worthy.

I know I am worthy. It was a journey to get to that place of knowing.

I am worthy!

What others think is none of my business.

Words of wisdom!  My daughter, who didn't finish college, struggles with self worth.  And yet--she is very hard worker, capable of various careers that don't require a degree! Sometimes it's a hard lesson for younsters

Our time here on planet Earth passes very quickly. We are all Body, Soul and Spirit. Only the last two are Eternal ( as the Body eventually fails in 70-85 years). Decisions we do or don’t make while alive here , will have a huge affect on our Eternal Standing.

This is so important what you stated: you have the power to decide your worth, and it's your responsibility to find the value of your life and how others will value you.

It is EVERYTHING!

faye schubert,

Some people spend all their lives searching for their self-worth; some may never find it, and others live in the fallacy.

Our thoughts and beliefs shape us, and, yes, the power to decide our worth lies within each of us. It is EVERYTHING!

Haha..you got the right idea of becoming a stone collection.

Do you need a business partner? I know about precious stones in Northern Thailand, ruby, emerald, and gold. No negotiation skills are needed; offer unbeatable values and raise two fingers! We can make a killing of this stone business! 😁

I hope all is well with you.

Hi Aura,
Jim Rohn was one of my favorite inspirational speakers. I loved the video. It is sad to see people go through life with the feeling of low self-worth. Sadly, it's usually a result of their upbringing and the negative messages they've been fed. Unfortunately, many (if not most) people don't grasp the reality that they can change their own thought processes.

We are all a work in progress.

Carol Williams -- Jim Rohn was my favorite too. While it's easy for some of us to detach negativity, for many, it may temporarily be impossible because of their environment and the company they choose.

I got your email and responded.

The RIGHT CHARLOTTE REALTOR!

It took me many moons to realize that I was worthy, Aura! I'm one that is all about making the other person feel that THEY are worthy. I don't believe it's about a college degree either...and I feel that our ability to determine our worth and RECOGNIZING that worth is so liberating.

A sad but, true story happened to me today - My husband and I were headed out to our son & daughter-in-law's home to celebrate our grandson's 1st birthday with about 30 other people. I recieved a call from one of my best friend's husband who asked me to convey to our group of 10 (5 couples) that his wife had lost her Mom this morning.

Of course, I was reduced to tears but, his latter words gave me the strength to phone every couple with resolution and bravery - "You are the glue that holds our group together - I just don't have the strength to call them all but, I know you have 'boundless strength.'

I hung up the phone, in tears again - how on earth do I measure up to either of his assessments of me? One thing is for sure, I was NOT going to let him down and I was 100% going to 'measure-up' to everything they expected of me!!

I have a friend that I would have voted, "the least likely to do well after college."  He took some time off and traveled across Asia.  He told stories about being the only American in whole cites and other incredible adventures.  He came back to the States and took a job with a developer.  30 years later, he is probably my most successful friend.  He invests money (much from Asia) in hotels, elder care buildings and other real estate.  His education really came after college.  He is also the most down to earth, great guy that you would ever meet.

Ray Henson - great story about your friend. No surprises. Thank you for sharing.

My daughter decided to spend a year at the City Year after high school graduation, where she wanted to help other kids. As a mom, I was devastated worrying about her losing good friends who would go to college. In the end, she received a scholarship after one year of work at the City Year and started college. I couldn't be more proud of her.
