Crocus in Bloom, Spring is in the Air!

Forget the cute little groundhog.  The crocus is the real harbinger of spring.

I planted a few crocus last fall.  They are tiny plants, but have rather large flowers and, the variety I planted, bloom very early in the year.  Saffron is harvested from the fall blooming variety.  It is easy to see why saffron is so highly valued coming from such a small plant.  I should have planted 100 or more!

Do you prefer the simple elegance of the white crocus with the fine purple lines or the regal beauty of the purple crocus?  Or do you just prefer using the rich, deep flavor of the finished product, saffron, for your favorite recipe?

I can't wait for the Daffodils to bloom!

Hello Raymond - whenever they arrive, blooming flowers have a nice appearance.  Almost like saying "Welcome Home".

Ray, I love both, and white flowers can add a lot to a flower bed.

I like the purple one too, Kathy Streib, but the white flower does help set off the purple flowers.  If I filled that bed with more, it would have been incredible.

Yes, it is time for protein drinks, Hannah Williams.  Mary Margaret started them about a month ago.  We went a little crazy over the holiday season....once again.

I hope you have a wonderful weekend too, Abby Stiller.

I do like the purple ones better, Kat Palmiotti, but it is like trying to choose between rocky road and mint chip ice cream.  I like mint chip the best, but I like both even better.  In other words, the more the merrier!

Plants are a better predictor of spring than a groundhog and its shadow, Brian England and much more fun to have in your yard.  Ha!

Well put, Michael Jacobs.  Flowers do turn a house into a home.

White is wonderful, Joan Cox, but I love those purple flowers.  My favorite color has always been red, but purple is a close second and has been gaining ground.  Have a great weekend.

These little blooms are among the first signs of spring, often poking through the snow.

Oh those crocus have a long wait before they start appearing here Raymond. I do like them, but they are not around for long. Too bad because they are so pretty.

I think the ephemeral appearance is part of the allure for me, Lawrence "Larry" & Sheila Agranoff. Cell: 631-805-4400.  It makes them special.  I used to have a cactus that was very plain for every day of the year, but one.  The one day was incredible, though.  This picture doesn't do it justice, but it is the best I have.

Gorgeous examples of pre-spring blooming beauties Raymond! Thank you for sharing them, I think the cactus is an Echinopsis and blooms here twice a year.

Thank you for the cactus name, Wanda Kubat-Nerdin - Wanda Can! A client gave me one, then that cactus had several others grow off it, then they all died one year.  Now, maybe I can find a replacement.
