Five of the best things to do in the community of West Hillhurst Calgary
West Hillhurst has a Walk Score of 40. What does this mean? It means that you can park your car and head out and explore your neighbourhood. Think of the money that you will save by NOT filling up your vehicle – money that you can use to go for a meal, a beer (or two) – or do some shopping. You can live a simpler life and spend your money on things that matter to you. Here is a list of MY top things to do in West Hillhurst.
Go for Breakfast!
Head to a neighbourhood icon - Dairy Lane Café – a modern, intimate café offering farm-to-table Canadian grub. Have a hankering for grass-fed burgers? Vegan burritos? Buttermilk Fried Chicken Sandwiches? They got it. Drop by for indoor and patio dining – or pop over and grab takeout. Originally opened in the ‘50s, Dairy Lane is the oldest restaurant in Calgary, transformed from a Milk Bar to a café that has strong connections with local farmers and suppliers. Go to 319-19 Street NW – it will not disappoint.
Go Thrifting!
Explore one of the most beloved consignment shops in Calgary. Tapestry is a combination of high-end consignment and gorgeous new clothing, accessories, and amusing cards located at 313 19 Street NW. A small shop with tons of treasures – Linda hand picks the best of the best and it is almost impossible to walk out of the shop without bringing something home. And when you need to clean out your closet – Tapestry will welcome you with open arms!
Watch a Film!
Though TECHNICALLY not in West Hillhurst, the Plaza Theatre is just 2 blocks east and it is too good to overlook! It is Calgary’s oldest, still-operating theatre in the city. If you want to support local – you need to head to 1133 Kensington Road NW to enjoy this newly rejuvenated haven for film buffs. Up for an adventure? The Plaza has a new concession stand, a food truck parked out front (swapped out every 2 weeks), and a cocktail bar designed to recall the vibe of West African taverns of the 1960s. Offering art-house fare or second runs of certain mainstream films for adults and families.
Have a beer and support the Legion!
It’s not your grandparents’ legion. Really. 1918 Tap and Table is a not-for-profit gastropub owned and operated by the Royal Canadian Legion – so you can stop in for a beer and feel good about it! Happy Hour runs from 3-6 pm Tuesday to Friday with $2 off all draft – and you can bring your doggo as well because there is plenty of room on the patio. Or stay inside and enjoy the big TVs and order some food – because your money will go to support Veterans.
Go for a walk along the river!
You are steps away from The Bow River Pathway – perfect for a walk, run, bike riding, or scootering. The pathway is on the south border of the community and runs parallel to the Bow River. The pathway stretches from Reconciliation Bridge to Edworthy Park and it often serves as a thoroughfare for commuters heading into the downtown core.
