The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch

~ Opening Day March 1, 2022 ~

The iconic Flower Fields in Carlsbad CA open to the public on Tuesday March 1st.

2021 was certainly different for this popular attraction. Due to the pandemic the Flower Fields implemented some new procedures to make visits as safe as possible following the closure for much of the 2020 season.

As in 2021, visitors must book their tickets online (none sold at the gate) for a specific date and arrival time.

The U-Pick Blueberry Patch, with its own parking area, was a new feature last year. As part of a visit to the Flower Fields you can enjoy picking blueberries, or go separately using the parking lot on Cannon Road at the North end of the Flower Fields. A 1-pint basket costs $5. Be aware that picking may not always be available.

Don’t expect things to look like this photo on Opening Day since the Flower Fields take a while to reach their peak, usually late March depending on the weather. But they are truly beautiful even when not at peak, and a gorgeous sign of spring!

Here’s a video from March 2015:

The Carlsbad Flower Fields have been a popular tourist attraction for more 60 years, with 55 acres of brightly colored Ranuncula, reportedly millions of flowers.  The transitions during the year are fascinating to watch, as the field changes from a brown dirt hillside to green plants, and then to vibrant colors, and then back again to brown dirt when blooming season is done.

The Carlsbad Flower Fields are open annually for about 2 1/2 months, from March 1st until Mother’s Day which is May 8th this year.

Here is some of what you can enjoy at the Flower Fields:

  • A historic Poinsettia display and orchid greenhouse
  • American Flag of Flowers on the south side of the fields – can be seen from Palomar Airport Road at Armada Drive by Costco
  • Sweet pea maze
  • Artist gardens and Bird Aviaries
  • Multiple gardens – Butterfly, Mediterranean, Illusion
  • Strawberry Shack serving all sorts of sweet treats

You will enjoy walking through the fields to experience the flowers close up.

But it you want a different view, take a ride on their antique tractor wagon ($6 for adults, $3 for children aged 3 to 10) to appreciate the Flower Fields up close. Purchase tickets once inside on your mobile device or with a credit card (sorry, no cash).

The Carlsbad Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch are easily visible from the I-5 Freeway if you look eastward (NOT while you are driving, of course) at the Palomar Road Exit. Just look for the windmill.

I personally think one of the best vantage points is looking down on the fields from Armada Drive, with the Carlsbad windmill, and 180 degree views of the ocean in the distance. And it’s free. I often stop by when showing property or heading to or from the Carlsbad Costco.

Of course it’s not the same as walking through the fields on foot, but you can stop by whenever you want!

Jeff,

What a lovely sight you shared.!  We had cold weather here and winds blowing.  They had a hard freeze warning for the wine country . which means they must have the wind mills going.

What a fantastic view. It would be perfect to just sit on the hill and watch a casual breeze send the flowers waving

Hi Ron and Alexandra Seigel  Thank you!! I'm looking forward to seeing the flowers in person before too long.

It was a beautiful day here, but windy and quite chilly - low 50s. It was down in the upper 30s last night!

It's a terrific lookout point Ed Silva  and a popular place to walk because of the views - flowers, ocean, etc.

Perhaps I should do a series, copying George Souto 's leaf series. Hopefully he would not mind!

Endre Barath, Jr. Well when I took it back in 2015 it felt like summer. LOL

It's been cold here, too...low 50s and in the high 30s/low 40s at night the last few nights.
