Should Pets Be Allowed in a Home During a Showing?

We hear about service animals and "comfort animals" and are not supposed to turn them away in public places.     Now should we allow other people's pets into our listings, especially when the property HAS pets?

Pets on showings

I had a listing that was a HOT commodity, and was blessed to have LOTS of showings in just two days.   Sometime during the 2nd day, (18 or so showings that day) someone brought a dog, and left a deposit in one of the bedrooms.

This Seller has a dog of her own, and two cats, which were very traumatized when she returned home.    It was sad hearing a week later, her dog has ingested the deposit, got very sick, and passed away a month later.

We are to allow these animals into areas where they were not allowed to before.    BUT, what if someone in the home has severe animal allergies?    In all my years selling homes, I never have had to put a restriction of --- No animals on showings.    Would have to if the Seller required it in the listing agreement.

Nobody can say we lead boring lives -- there are always some new challenges in this career!

Good morning Joan. Have restricted pets from entering a showing. If  you buy it your pet will be welcome right after closing. Any questions! Enjoy your day.

While an owner may well have pets in their homes, when they are viewing another house, it is not their home and the pets do not belong there. Agents should be cognizant of that and tell the potential buyer

That is terrible. No one should bring a pet into someone else's home without the home owner's permission. It doesn't matter if the home is for sale or not!

Wayne, feel like you shouldn't HAVE to put into MLS, no pets are allowed, but maybe we should start.

Kat Palmiotti that is how I feel, as you don't know if the homeowner's pet is territorial.   It isn't their home!

No dogs allowed on tour of homes when I'm showing homes.

No dogs allowed on tour of homes when I'm the listing agent.

If there were evidence to the contrary, consequences would be pursued by me - at minimum, a cleaning bill to the idiot agent that allowed it.

1 - Absolutely

2 - Absolutely

3 - we had overlapping showings, and no one would tell me WHO had the dog, or I would have sent a cleaning bill, and even the vet bill!

Hannah Williams I don't think someone would fall apart in the 15-30 min viewing a home.   That is just rude taking your pet into someone else's home without permission.

I don’t know if it was a practical joke or not but I once showed a house that in the MLS agents only section said don’t let the snake out. When I got to the house, I had warned the buyer we might be in for a surprise and low and behold ; The aquarium that held the snake was laying shattered on the bedroom floor. It took us all of one minute to leave that house. If it was a practical joke it wasn’t funny Joan 😳.

Well Joan, I think it is inconsiderate for people to bring their dog to showings. I had a very nice agent on my team who apparently allowed people to bring their little dog in to homes. I had no idea until an irate agent called me and told me they saw them on the home video system. I was shocked. When I confronted the agent, she said she thought our area was such a dog friendly area and didn't think people would mind. I did remind her that some people have allergies. They may also have babies crawling on the floor. I don't know about service dogs. I suppose if I had a client with a service dog that I would call the commission then check with the listing agent.

Carla Freund OH MY, that is quite the assumption of your team agent!    I would think a homeowner would have the right to say NO pets, even support animals if they have pet allergies.

I have had clients bring pets to an appointment, but never wanted to bring them in to the house. I think bringing a pet into someone else's home is selfish and unthoughtful, how can you not clear up afterwards, they must have known. Shocking.

That's a pretty shocking story, Joan, even more so that the pet owner was so disrespectful.

I had an open house one time and this couple showed up with a small dog - she was carrying and I had to ask that they take turns and not bring the dog in even though it was being held.

Jeff Dowler, CRS I had never even THOUGHT someone would bring a dog, and now need to put into MLS - no pets allowed!   Shocking is right!    At your open house, they should stay outdoors with the pet.
