Insight into Select Ann
ActiveRain has always been an awesome community. The February challenge has me thinking. What is My Story? This could be a book. So here goes:
I was born in St. Louis at the baby factory. Yes, my mother actually called it that. I am youngest of 11!?! What were my parents thinking? They had 6 boys in a row before I was born. My mom always said they stopped when they had me because they knew what a comfort I was going to be. I brought them happiness from the moment I was born.
I was brought up in a loving household with parents who cared very much about the quality of life. As one could expect, finances were tight but my parents made sure we all felt LOVED. When I was a small child, we lived in a house without air conditioning. (I know, I must be OLD!) My mother would take ALL of us to the pool everyday. It was a wonderful way to spend time. This taught me to appreciate the sunshine! (And to this day, life is always better with sunshine).
My mother baked everyday and let me help. My youngest memory is of sitting on the counter top (WHAT? I can hear the gasping) and helping mix some cookie dough. I was 18 months old (More gasping) After she turned on the mixer, I proceeded to stick a spoon in to take a taste. Needless to say, I bent the beaters. She was such a resourceful woman. She immediately found the name of the company and their address. She wrote a letter and low and behold, a new set of beaters showed up. My mother taught me to never be afraid to share an opinion or idea.
My father, too, was instrumental in my life. He showed me what a good work ethic was. He went to work everyday and improved his job title by reading. He taught me that knowledge is power. Often he would say, Go read a book! Before I was born, he invested in a set of the Book of Knowledge.
He loved to sing and play the guitar. "You are My Sunshine" was one of his favorites and subsequently mine too. He was a gentle man with kind eyes. Before my mother died, she needed assistance walking, so I was in front of her, helping. She looked into my eyes and said, "You have your father's eyes." I was so happy to hear her say that.
Fast forward to my real estate career. My first broker was the best! Sharon taught me that you cannot make anyone do anything. All you can do is make suggestions. The only person you are in control of is you. (I always add "MOST of the time" to this statement).
If I wrote a book, it would be about my real estate career. It would be a scary, funny, true story. I shudder to think anyone could make this stuff up!
Thank you for reading. I am the agent with a sense of humor, because life is too short to be so serious!
