Waxhaw is roughly 20 minutes south of Charlotte and three miles from the South Carolina state line.

Waxhaw is one of Union County's oldest cities, dating back to the 1700s, and named after the Waxhaws (formerly known as the Wysacky), an Indian tribe who historically inhabited the area. Waxhaw took its rightful place as Union County's third oldest town when it was founded in 1889.

Waxhaw, with a population of about 17,147 people, has managed to keep its small-town character while achieving quality growth. The Waxhaw Historic District, located in the heart of town, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is home to a number of historic structures and attractions.

The pedestrian bridge that spans the railroad lines is the most famous attraction. It was originally used to allow autos to cross as trains passed beneath it. It was designated for pedestrians exclusively in 1940 and is now utilized on a regular basis by adults and children waiting for a train to pass beneath their feet.

Many residents remember playing under the big water tower that towers above downtown Waxhaw as children, or it beckoning a tired traveler home after a long day on the road.

The stunning silver edifice, which was built in 1940, continues to be the subject of numerous photographers looking for a symbol of small-town America.
