Spring is here. Every year I drive around looking for the cherry trees, flowering crab apples, and pink dogwoods. Some people seek out Christmas lights, I seek out spring--in flowers, green grass, and pollen on the ponds.
This year as I traveled m. route looking for the flowering cherries and crab apples I came across "the house". This used to be a B&B, all white, the big porch was white with a blue ceiling and green on the porch boards, classic. The house was one with a gold star by it on our route. We always loved to see what bloomed first.
Today we were distracted by "the house". They have 2 big cherries that bloom first in our town, but today we did not see them we only saw "the house". I am very disturbed by what they have done. The classic house is gone. At first, I thought there had been a fire but as I drove around it I realized they had chosen this. The color is black. Not Navy or charcoal gray it is black.
When you see black inside a home you know that it is going to suck all the light out of the room. I don't like black counters, walls, or ceilings--but I see it every day in the houses I sell. I also see black exteriors, but it is usually toned down with some copper accents, stonework, or solid wood doors. This house still has the features from the era it was built--some shakes, original wavy and lead glass in the windows, and the huge oaks in the rear of the house--but the exterior color soaks up all the light so you do not see the details.
Paint is usually a 10-year deal. I hope when I return next spring it is back to being a colonial blue, bright white, or even pink...anything but black.
