This Week…Taking the High Road

My Aunt Berda always said, “Never stoop.” When you’re 9 years old, it takes a while to process that. What the heck does that mean?  She was only about 5 feet tall so did it have anything to do with that?

How beautiful is it to stay silent when someone

expects you to be enraged? (Unknown)

My journey through life has shown me exactly what she meant.

This week there was an opportunity to see an example of taking the high road. While some may argue that it was staged or that there was a fear on one person’s part of repercussions from others, doesn’t matter.

Weak people revenge. Strong people forgive. Intelligent people ignore.

Albert Einstein

There are times when events and life call upon us to take a stand…step up to the plate…say that nasty thought.

And there are other situations when no matter what our moral compass may be telling us…when social norms might say it’s ok to do what we’d like to do…the mature side of us saysTake the High Road.

Take the high road. There’s a lot less

traffic up there. Dr. Phil McGraw

Of course, what we do is our choice to make. I can’t tell someone they should or should not have “stooped.” However, whatever we do says a lot to the world about who we are.

Never argue with a fool; onlookers may not be able to tell the difference. Mark Twain

Have a wonderful weekend!

Hi Kathy Streib - Lots of great quotes that fit perfectly in the scheme of current events. I often think about Social Media and the influence it has had on our younger generations especially.  In my opinion, we were fortunate not to grow up with it.  When we were young and made mistakes, it didn't follow us around for the rest of our lives.  Now it does. Many people either already have or may regret not taking the high road.  I remember hearing the phrase, "how would you handle yourself if your mom was standing right behind you?".   Some people should think about that more often...

My Mom taught me this too Kathy.  She always said - If you can't say anything positive than don't say anything, just be quiet and take the high road. I have zero energy to get involved is crazy mean spirited 'talks'.  There just is no point of it to me.

Hi Kathy,
I love that last quote by Mark Twain.  It reminds me of the quote by Abe Lincoln:
"Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt.”

I'm pretty mild-mannered and rarely get angry or lash out. I can tell you, though, when I do people know not to mess with me. 😊

Kat Palmiotti isn't that a wonderful quote...and so "Mark Twain-ish"

Wayne Martin we think of Mark Twain for his books but his quotes are the best.

Ron and Alexandra Seigel  it's interesting how some things we are told when we are young really stick with us.

Brian England I agree. In my opinion, it's easy to poke fun and make a joke out of it. It takes brains to make us laugh without mocking someone.

Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD I agree with you. It's not easy to let things go...I've been guilty of it. But we have to pick our battles and understand the consequences.

We are all guilty of it, I shudder to think of  the moments when I stepped on the soap box. ugh.

Jeffrey DiMuria 321.223.6253 Waves Realty well said!!!!  And then after those 15 minutes you wish you could walk everything back. That said, there are important things worth stooping for but we have to b wise enough to know when.

Joan Cox so true. It's better to learn to count 10 first.

Sheri Sperry - MCNE® I agree about social media. It makes us say and do things we would not in "real life." And that's a good one about asking ourselves if we would do it if our mothers were standing behind us.

Anna Banana Kruchten CRS, Phoenix Broker as much as we want to say something so many times, it's truly better to just remain silent and walk away.

Kathy taking the high road is not easy.  I remember not so long ago a well know president's wife saying "When they take the low road, we take the high road."  Great advice but unfortunately their actions proved more like "When they take the low road, we will take an even lower one."

Kathy good for you, I found in my experience taking the high road is not easy.... have you ever seen the movie Schindler's list? Where Schindler is teaching the Camp Commandant to forgive.... and he tries but then goes back to his evil ways.... I am the same way I try but there are times I just can not do it and tell the person what I really think of them, Endre

Hi Kathy:

There's  lots of wisdom in your words and these quotes. I think the sign of a emotionally mature person is when they DO take the high road and don't get involved in controversy or an emotional argument.

Jeff
