Which Hat Am I Wearing Today?

I bet most of you in any realm of the real estate industry can relate to the wearing of many different hats not only from day to day but moment-by-moment. The real estate world changes rapidly and is never the same and  completely unpredictable. Therefore, in order to survive and thrive in this business, we need to be able to pivot quickly and know which hat we are currently wearing.

Here are just a few of the hats we could be wearing at any given moment. I call these hats our A.C.E. hats:

Advisor - This hat is what most people expect from a real estate professional. We run market data, advise clients regarding the current market conditions, and assess reports. We provide our clients with any and all data points in order for them to make the best decision regarding their real estate transaction.

Counselor - We all know the importance of this particular role.  A huge part of real estate is to assist our clients through life events. We could be dealing with those who are purchasing their first home, the effects of divorce and selling property, or the loss of a spouse. There are many more real-life situations that involve real estate professionals on a daily basis.

Encourager - For most people, the purchase of a home is their largest investment. Because of this, it is very important that real estate professionals remain calm at all times and provide an ear and lots of encouragement along the way.

No doubt, there are many more hats that we wear. The point is that real estate is fluid, ever-changing, and requires quick thinking along with a calm reserve. I have always shared with new agents that this gig is not for the faint of heart.

Whether you are an ACE agent or a rookie, knowing which hat to wear and when will make a world of difference for your clients. Be ready to keep your hats handy and to wear them frequently.

Love love love your new signature! FABULOUS! And I have often said Realtors should have to have a four-year degree in psychology to do their jobs wells. Nice post and so right on!

And a different hat for the different situations and clients.

Having a similar background, the psychology used has been a huge asset.

Great post, Paula... so many become real estate agents because they think it's an easy job. They really don't understand what happens behind the scenes and all those hats we need to wear and change in and out of in a minute... then there's the business owner hat, too!

Good morning Paula.  Good post with the 'ACE' hat trick.  Like the pic to go along with it.  And in scrolling down to comment I see what I believe to be your new 'Posted By' signature block.  Very nice.  Enjoy the rest of your week.  Mark

Yes, those are but three of the many hats you wear. I think far too many agents become licensed without having a clue that any of those hats will be required.

My business partner and I discuss this regularly as our industry and business model requires it. On any given day, I can wear buyer's agent, seller's agent, showing assistant, Chief Marketing Officer, handy man, lead generator, ISO, and more. There is never a dull moment yet can be overwhelming at times.

Paula,

I totally agree, we wear many hats.  I find myself wearing the  credit counselor hat a great deal.  Lately, when working with buyers I am always advising on credit score and credit report related issues.   Great blog thanks for sharing.

I do understand your hat metaphor Dr. Paula McDonald

I wear one hat. That is the hat of a Real Estate Broker.

While wearing that hat I may provide advice, encouragement, etc.

yes,  ... no doubt we shall wear many hats in our daily activities of real estate.  Some become more natural (skills) than others, and as we progress through  our endeavors we will learn what works best for our clients.

You make very interesting points I just worry about real estate agents thinking that they should be wearing the hat of copywriter, photographer, content marketing strategist, SEO strategist, accountant, payroll specialist, videographer, customer service rep, recruiter, admin, etc.

Your true job is to provide the promised proprietary result better than anyone else can with your heart in it all the way. If you are promising a life-changing result and delivering on every part of your promise then you are always wearing the right hat.

Great post!
