You grab your keyboard and twist the blog a little harder.

C'mon, let's pop the lid and get my business booming!!

You've heard the legend.  Back in the early days of blogging ActiveRain was just packed with the mythical Google Juice and if you followed the lessons taught by the leaders, you were going to get found.  Easy, peasy.

Flash forward a decade or so and perhaps it's not so easy.

There's a LOT more competition out there.

You've got the mega-real estate companies and portals with millions in their budget and you've got moths flying out of an empty wallet.

You've got to compete for the attention of people that prefer 144 characters or less.  And Tik Tok, and Instagram, and Facebook, and...and...and....

Periodically some guru will proclaim BLOGGING IS DEAD!!!  Maybe they just want clicks, maybe they're sincere, frankly, either way I'm going to go Rhett Butler because I know what I know. 

BLOGGING DID WORK. 

Blogging STILL works.

IF. YOU. DO. IT. RIGHT.

Now what's right for me may not be so right for you.

You tailor your blog posts for YOUR audience and what YOUR audience wants may be different than what MY audience wants.

If you live in wide open spaces where the smallest lot comes in 10 acre increments, you'd be wasting your time with my niche of low maintenance housing options. 

My niche works because I live in an area with two metropolitan areas doing their best to merge somewhere between Cincinnati and Dayton.

The burden is on you as a blogger to understand your market, your audience, and what your audience seeks that you can provide better than the big portals and the folks with the million dollar budget.

YOU HAVE AN ADVANTAGE.

You are LOCAL.  The national companies work off data, data that you should understand better than they and their algorithms can understand.

Recognize a weakness in your MLS and the information provided to the public?

There's your opportunity to gain business.

Where does the consumer find information about Y when the big companies only know X?

You know Y.  You're living it and breathing it every day, the challenge for you is to take Y and put it together in a way that gets found and engages consumers.

Side benefit?  Blogging gives you a bigger digital footprint.  Combine it with other efforts (Google My Business for instance) and you're more likely to get found by agents seeking referral partners and people doing "near me" type searches.

Blogging isn't a sprint.  No posting twice and sitting back waiting on the phone to ring.  It takes reaching a critical point of relevant content that establishes you as a "go to" agent in the eyes of Google's bots and the consumer too.

But in time, you'll start to see the signs that it's working.

The signs aren't always so simple as "I have a house to sell" calls.

The signs might be "mistake" calls that think you're the HOA manager, or the builder's rep, or any host of other similar calls.

I don't mind the "wrong number" type contacts.  They're solid evidence that blogging STILL works.

So find your audience.  Find your blogging voice.  Have patience, and watch for the signs that your blog is working.

Hi Bill another great perspective.  Blogging does work and it does take time. And even if we don't get the google juice like we used to in the earlier years, it still can work great if done the right way.

I don't know in the early days how much of it was because ActiveRain was on top of the SEO game, or just a lack of competition, but now anyone that wants to can try and build a web presence for their business.

That's the issue I have with some of the canned content we see here.  If you have a captive audience, that can work.  But if you're competing with 1000s of other sites for eyeballs, what's unique to pull people to you?

Good morning and thank you for another right-on post. I've been getting those calls thinking I'm the HOA and that I know all the rules. Every time I get one of those requests, I contact the HOA and get the information. It makes me more knowledgeable about that particular area, AND I have another person I'm in contact with. Win-win.

If nothing else, those type calls confirm that the public is finding our work.  Might it lead to some future business from those callers?  Maybe, and maybe beats an outright "never".

Great advice. It's interesting people say blogging doesn't work in a world where influencers are making a killing by blogging and being on social media. It works but it takes concentrated effort and finding the right audience. People are looking for what the locals think not the big companies.

There are many different ways to be successful.  I suspect when some real estate "guru" puts out a blogging is dead announcement, they're just trying to get attention OR trying to sell something, some magic beans that will lead to new business...and it will, for THEM.

Back in 2009, I wrote a blog here.  I still have a lot of fun with it when sales people call trying to to sell me paid ads on Google to get on the infamous "page 1 of Google".  If I have time to let my smart @ss self out to play along I say "Oh is that hard to do organically?"  Yes, it is almost impossible especially with the big real estate companies dominating that space.  "Oh, so it would be even harder to get something on a global scale, like World Peace?" It would be impossible.  "In that case, do me a favor, would you Google "The Answer to World Peace Disclosed" and tell me what you see for the first organic response?  Most people get this:  https://activerain.com/blogsview/1019578/answer-to-world-peace-disclosed-

Thirteen years now, I have held the #1 spot for that search term.  That might make me uniquely qualified to be your Realtor in Boise.

Jim, those type calls and emails crack me up.  They don't know my keywords and they don't know my niche, and we're page 1 for the things I put effort into, and in some cases multiple spots on page 1.  I don't need to pay anyone a dime to get there.  You've proven you can do it.  Blogging can definitely be a winning strategy.

Liz and Bill Spear I love blogging and am trying to be more diligent.  Another thing I love to do with those sales calls is ask THEM what their company does.  They typically something like "We excel at SEO".  I reply, interesting, because I am on page 5 of Google searching the term "We excel at SEO" and I haven't found your company yet!

And I suspect for our newer bloggers, getting that affirmation the first few times that they're getting found is a positive reinforcement to keep blogging.  Over time, the ratio of mistake to potential client calls gets more favorable.

Hi Bill- your post is spot on. Over the years, things have changed...we've all learned much more about blogging and SEO and yes, the competition is definitely out there. However, if you don't work at it and throw your hands up, then it definitely won't work.

You hit the nail on the head Bill.  Although it's been years since I blogged consistently, I firmly believe the blogging is not dead. Not only does blogging serve buyers and sellers well, it also serves to educate the real estate community.

Good advice. I know the buzz in online marketing has shifted to video and platforms like TikTok, but blogging still works and a lot of people enjoy having content they can read rather than watch. 

I recently returned to the real estate business, and to ActiveRain, after over a decade out of the business, and during that time I'd still get the occasional phone call from a person who had found my blog here. If it worked while dormant, then it's got to work better once active again and up-to-date.
