ARE YOU FLEXIBLE WITH CHANGING PREFERENCES?

By
Education & Training with Performance Development Strategies

Just for the record I do not want to be all virtual but that is just me.  But I do prefer virtual in some cases.  In this new reality don't we want to attract the best teams?  A forward thinking leader will think of what needs to get done rather than how it is done.  If focus on that the answer to virtual or in person will present itself.

When crisis has happened in the past, we have come out of it stronger, but we did not go back to the way things were before. We won’t be going back to the way things were this time either. In adapting we have learned better ways to get work done. Virtual teams which have been around for a while will take a more prominent role. There will also be new hybrids of in person combined with virtual.

Technology has shown us the way. Today we a seeing more efficient ways to work that takes less time and does not involve travel. Online training is now very effective through webinars or interactive sessions. Although technology is the same human nature and human needs have not changed. Remember that engagement and accountability are at the forefront of high performing teams.

Here are some important points to remember when managing virtual teams.

1 Clear Vision, Values, and Goals. This is important in every organization. However, working virtually means that these are not reinforced because people are not in the office every day.   Best way to remind people of these is to include them on virtual materials. For example, an email might have Core values or Vision included in the signature second of the email. Goals should be on virtual goal planning sheets which could be included in Google Sheets or Google Docs. Encourage shared goals and team goals. Encourage team members to build on each other’s ideas and play to their strengths. This builds a strong team relationship.

2 Step up Communication. Communicate often. Why not have weekly meetings with check in by everyone. Let each person explain what they have done in the last week regarding their accountability. Technology has made it possible to utilize all our senses giving or receiving information. Video conferencing with tools such as Zoom, or Cisco Webex create much more total collaboration than conferencing by phone. Encourage teams to have regular meetings using video conference sessions. These virtual face-to-face meetings can help build a sense of community and familiarity. They can communicate their successes and you can communicate your expectations.

3 Foster a Culture of Accountability. When working alone people struggle with accountability. As a sole practitioner I welcome having accountability partners. If you want people to achieve goals, then you need to set clear expectations and check on achievement of those goals. The best way to insure that is to have regular check ins. Don’t micromanage because achieve their goals at different paces. But make sure that you the extent of progress each person has an that they are motivated to be accountable for their goals.

Virtual Team Leader

Virtual teams create new challenges as well as new opportunities. I think, however, that we need to accept the fact that they are here to stay and they are an integral part of work in the 21st Century.  For a similar post on our website see IN PERSON VIRTUAL OR HYBRID.

I am not particularly a fan of 100% virtual as I need to have a face to face with people so I can see other reactions and body language

Hi Grant- I'm with you on this. Virtual isn't going away but there needs to be some face to face interaction. This in turns helps with communication and accountability.

Nina - there is a time for everything.

Roy - thank you very much.

Kat - it can work if you make the effort to do so.

Wayne - yes, it really is a matter of managing change.

Michael - thanks I tried to make that a point of the post.

Brian - there are a percentage of people you have to convince change.  Those that embrace it help those fighting it.

Ed - on the other hand there are times when it is convenient and might move the transaction faster.

Paul - ok.  I understand that one.

George - the flexibility is helping me now.  I am virtual part of today including 2pm and in person another part.

Joan - that is convenient for you.

Kathy - it all fits together.

Although virtual meetings has helped so many during the past two years, getting back to eye to eye contact is so much better for many reasons!

If there is one thing that we can all agree on, it's that the pandemic required us all to make lots of changes in how we operate our businesses. The silver lining to that is that we all had to learn so many new things, many of which we now realize have been invaluable to the growth and efficient operation of our businesses. Great post and observations, Grant.

It's interesting as I'm about to post my blog about "virtual services" for the real estate business. My business is primarily online, so we need to adapt and take advantage of online technology such as a "cloud-based transaction management system."

My other thought is that the virtual connection is not "better than" a face-to-face interaction, but it's not easy to ignore the benefits of "virtual" business ways. Ultimately, it's a matter of "surviving" and "adapting" to change, and it is not that bad!

Good morning Grant.  I so much appreciate virtual classes.  They cut down, eliminate, the chatter and the constant off topic stories.  Learning, from the instructor, foremost on the agenda, and usually at a much faster pace.  Yes indeed, change can be good.  M

Larry and Sheila - yes although the flexibility includes more people.

Roy - have a great week.

Emcee - thank you very much.  What you say is spot on.

Aura - like Emcee you have highlighted the benefits.  Why not utilize them

Mark - I can't add any more to that.

Virtual is helpful on the fly and planned to save travel time to meetings.   I've hosted weekly BOD meetings virtually for quite some time and can't see doing it any other way.  Still in person meetings are so much appreciated and a big part of the human condition.

Lot of good advice here, Grant, for dealing with the "new" virtual realty. It's certainly been a couple years of massive change for everyone. No doubt some have adapted more effectively than others, and perhaps like it better. I still prefer in person most of the time but that is not always possible.

Jeff

Good afternoon Grant Schneider ,

There is no question Virtual meetings are here to stay and do work well in some cases. However it's easy to slide into that easy role of not taking time to get ready, drive to your meeting and have a face to face conversation with someone and NOTHING trumps that!

Couldn't agree more.   Being virtual has it's benefits, but human interaction is definitely required for all of us to some degree.  I miss teaching live classes!
