One of my pet peeves as a painting contractor was the way some of my employees would fill little nail holes. In one case, we had a house that literally had hundreds of little holes through the house. I told my employee exactly how I wanted it done. I showed up the next day a real problem. The homeowner had showed up and told my employee to over fill the holes with Spackle using his putty knife. He made mountains out of mole hills and it took hours to fix! This is how it should be done.
Filling Small Nail Holes
Sometimes, less is more and this is definitely one of those times. If you fill just the little hole and then touch up the spot with a small brush, your eye is less likely to pick up the fix. You should even be careful touching up the paint. Fresh paint (even flat paint) will go on shinier than the old paint. If you touch up a big spot when you do not have to, there is a good chance you will see the shine of the new paint.
Spackle will shrink so bigger holes do need to be overfilled, but that is for another day.
