Tuesdays Treasures…Celebrating Birds

Many of you already know that Larry and I have gone to the birds so how fitting that today is National Audubon Day.

Why this day?  April 26 is the birthday of John James Audubon. His personal background is interesting however it is his artistry and attention to detail of birds that is his legacy.

We have been fortunate to observe wetland birds in FL as well as backyard birds in our own backyard.

When we returned to Houston, we began maintaining and monitoring bluebird boxes since their natural nesting habitat was diminishing thanks to growing development.

There are so many advantages to encouraging birds in your own backyard…insect control, pollination, weed control, and your own personal enjoyment!

We have the Merlin Bird ID App (IOS and Android) on our phones. Not only does it make it easy to identify birds you see but you can also hear their calls and sounds.

My favorite bird to listen to is the Northern Mockingbird which happens to be the state bird of Texas.

What’s in your backyard???

I am interested in that app you have mentioned Kathy about their sounds, and will have to tell Larry (my Larry yours already knows). He is constantly trying to imitate their songs!

Love the photos!

I don't know what birds we have, but I do enjoy them. It is always nice to see a colorful bird on the railing of the deck or a tree branch outside the window. We have a tall bush outside our bedroom window that I see birds coming in and out of on a regular basis. Plenty of chirping out there now as I write this.

Hi Wayne Martin I'd imagine that pigeons would be a big problem, especially if you're walking under them.

Buzz Mackintosh Guess what...we have a few Orioles that visit un on their journey north and south. We have oranges out for them.

Kat Palmiotti I get it...the last thing you want to do is attract those larger animals. The biggest concern I have would be snakes.

Grant Schneider that would be a great thing for you to do with your grandson!!!

Kathy:

I haven't heard of that app - I need to check it out.

I didn't know the Northern Mockingbird was your state bird. They certainly are fun to listen to...we have one in our canyon that has been singing practically non-stop it seems. Thankfully it hasn't been singing all night as they sometimes do when looking for a mate.

Dear Kathy,

Since I let the birds take care of the pest control, my dirt has gotten a lot better. It was just dead hard clay originally, but now you can actually easily plan things. A couple years ago, we had a nightingale in the summer and some years before that, a woodcock in the winter leaf litter.
