Ask An Ambassador: Positive or Negative?

Real Estate Agent with Transaction Alliance 513.520.5305 SAL.2002007747

With a blog, we're working with a flat medium.

In person I speak fluent sarcasm (seems to be a common trait with most engineers I know), but without a "sarcasm font" I could type what was meant as a joke and next thing you know someone has their undergarments in a bunch.

It's another reason I tend to be very selective in my blog topic choice.  I've kicked many a blog post to the virtual trash can because I couldn't achieve the tone I sought.

Trying to turn something that felt negative into a positive can be a challenge, and our business is full of opportunities to dwell on the negative.

The listing agent that thought changing the status in MLS to PENDING was adequate notification while our buyers were left on pins and needles for hours after the seller's decision deadline?  No response to emails, phone calls or texts?  Yep, there's fertile ground for a good rant there.

The buyer who quits just after you found the perfect house because his financial advisers are convinced we're in another real estate bubble?  That's some ARGH stuff right there.

The buyers that reach out to you again about a particular community after you fired them a year ago for going straight to the listing agent to write an offer and lied to that agent about you?  Yep, that'll lift your pressure relief valve!

Now any of those topics could be presented in a positive or negative manner.

A full rant OR stressing the importance of having a listing agent that understands the importance of communication and professional courtesy.

A full rant OR an educational piece about why the local market conditions are NOT like they were for the last recession.  That maybe housing values could outpace inflation and protect assets?

A full rant OR a post about the importance of trust in a real estate agent's relationship with their clients.

If I choose the full rant mode for every post, what's the probable outcome?

Entertained readers and lots of comments?  Maybe.  Most everything I listed is a been there, done that moment for us as agents.

Maybe a perception that a LOT goes wrong in my real estate life.  And what's the common denominator to all those things??  ME.

There may be nothing wrong with sprinkling in the occasional rant type post in our blog.

But the question I ask myself when writing my posts:  What if this post is the FIRST post of mine someone ever reads?

It's your blog to do with as you will, but the difference between positive and negative may be the difference between business and naaaaah...this isn't the agent for me.

Until next Tuesday, just Ask An Ambassador if you need help.

Your point is very well taken.    I especially wonder about agents ranting of difficult clients.    Is it the belief the next client will better learn how to appease their agent, or will the next client simply avoid agents who rail against them?

Self-inquiry before posting is an excellent idea!

Brian, I can't think of any buyer or seller who would put the burden on themselves to "be better" if they read an agent rant.  Put the same lesson in an educational style post and I think you've at least got a chance with them.

Bill the very first phone call I had with Brad Andersohn  was always be positive which is how I am anyway.  Have a seen a lot of 'stuff' over the years, of course, especially as a broker with agents.  Is it worth me dragging 'stuff' out. No. I am not going to waste my energy or time on any of that stuff blogging. If I have a question. I will reach out to another broker or agent and get some feedback. The question I do have for you is  what is an example fluent sarcasm - Little Miss Bad Manners?  I thought that was funny!!

Ranting and negativism in our blogging, and social media, is not likely going to serve a useful purpose, other than perhaps making the writer feel better. The risk to reputation, potential income, and perhaps the company you are affiliated with, is not worth it. Better to carefully think through what you are saying and why before it's too late. Or write your rant post and delete it!

Jeff, So many cases of people "seeking other job opportunities" to put it in corporate-speak based on something posted in their "private" social media space.  Day job and personal life overlap more than ever, and anything that can be perceived to hurt a corporation's brand image can and will be used against said offenders.  We're now on the image clock 24/7/365.

Lynn, It's something that strikes me when I see a blog that is regularly filled with rants.  Is the writer the innocent victim of the situations, or a primary contributor to creating the issues that cause the rant?

There’s enough negativity on Twitter alone these days and a lot of it  on the news too. I’m all about the positivity and the constructive advice that I get from all of you on here. :

I'm not much of a Twitter user, nor anything else that provides a lot of negativity routinely.  I can be selective with what I allow into my life, and make that choice.

The value of the written word. All of us re-invent real estate blogging style on the blank screen every session sitting down at the keyboard right? You have a purpose way beyond entertainment or soul searching or sharing your two cents opinion on a topic. To deliver something of value. then adding more posts based on what works, that gets results. Real estate is all about the three "L"s but timing, relationships, your topic choice should be all about your audience needs. Realizing you are the local expert, with insider information for the audience to tap into from someone who can sincerely help buyers and sellers because of all of our individual / collective valuable experiences Liz and Bill Spear !

Exactly!  We have an opportunity to provide information that is meaningful for our area home buyers and sellers.  How we present that information can be the difference between them clicking NEXT and finding another agent, or giving us the opportunity to earn their business.

Great post Bill! I too have deleted comments. I'm sure some things get through. I'm generally an optimist but I'm prone to ranting sometimes too. Sometimes writing something and deleting it takes care of the need to rant.

I love how you ask yourself, "What if this is the first post someone ever reads".

And of course, there are text that can come across wrong. There have been times I've just picked up the phone and said, thought I better call because a text can sometimes come across wrong.

Great job!

I often prefer talking via phone than texting.  It's too easy to not transfer intent and tone when it's just black and white text.  And depending on the person, emojis not be the way to go :)

Yeah, I'm not overly thrilled, and still waiting for the seller signed contract rejecting our offer.  I don't think the agent was dealing with large numbers of offers, so it shouldn't be that difficult to collect what is needed and formally close this out.

Here's a good one for your rant side. Buyer shows up for the inspection. Young woman, first time buyer, father is with her and he's a plumber. I explained to them both in the driveway that we will be leaving the home in the exact condition it's in when we walk in, among a bunch of several other instructions and info about the inspection. Halfway through I get a call from the listing agent that tells me to get the man out of the house who is sitting in the study at their desk looking in the file drawers and reading mail on the desk. I walk around the corner with his daughter and inform him he just got me in some trouble and he has to leave the house. He says he's just making sure his little girl is protected and the sellers aren't hiding anything. Sorry pal, outside.

Lesson learned, make sure that our driveway speech is changed to include keeping hands off of personal belongings in the home. That's an easy to write blog and reinforces the fact we respect the seller's home and are incharge at the inspection.

Scott, You'd think that wouldn't be something you'd have to tell people, but as we've both seen, what should be obvious still has to be directly conveyed, and even then you never know what some will do next.

Liz & Bill,

Interesting post! Over the years I have been posting, there have been many times when I've made negative comments or shared unpleasant experiences......but in doing so, I was attempting to share an event in order that others can learn or benefit from what someone else may have dealt with.

On an almost daily basis, I am exposed to some of the most "confusing" logic shared by a sundry of buyers, sellers, fellow practitioners and various participants involved with the process. I've learned over the years, that much of our populace considers themselves "experts" on just about any subject. With this said......a seasoned realtor has to accept behavior, often bordering on "nitwittery"...... with a touch of "hand-wringing" thrown in for good measure, during the course of any given day.

Posting is a medium which allows for free expression. Among that expression, the release of stress, tension or frustration in written form, will do wonders for one's state of mind.

I've always attempted to provide those viewing my posts......with a "learning experience", even when negativity or unfortunate factors make up part of my writing.

Hopefully, what I have shared, will encourage others to consider writing a post with a goal in mind, to share experiences which can be categorized as a "teaching moment" regardless of whether negativity or misfortune make up part of the story.

I think it's key to find the right balance.  There can be negative content within a post, but using it for educating vs. I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT LOW DOWN SO AND SO DID XXXXXXX!!!!!

And thanks, your comment pushed me over 3,000,000 points :)
