It's been such a long time since I have had a job. Well, let's go wayyyyyyy back. My first job was in 1981 - five days after I graduated from high school. I was 17 years old, and I was supposed to work there just for the summer. I got accepted to University of Florida; but when I started making that $5.85 per hour, that's when new plans came about. I went to work at Jackson Memorial Hospital (JMH) in Miami, FL. Jackson Memorial Hospital is known as one of the best hospitals in the world. I enjoyed working there but I knew as a young girl I wanted more than just working 9 to 5.
I worked in the financial department. When I was in high school, I took business courses such as typing, shorthand, book-keeping, etc. I enjoyed those classes such as that, and I received good grades. Back to my employment at JMH, I worked 15 years and woke up one day and decided to give them a pink slip with zero dollars in my bank account. My family thought I was crazy; but I could not do another day. I had to leave Mr. Charlie's job. I had had enough. Now, it was time for me to spread my wings. I have never worked another day in my life because when I wake up in the morning, I love what I do.
Here are the three things that I did take with me:
1. I learned how to work as a team
2. I learned how to speak some Spanish
3. Working there helped me develop morals, values, and high standards
The adults who were older than me - they carried me and treated me as if I was their child, and I am so thankful for them today. Most people who I met there are still my friends today.
So that's my story and I am forever grateful that working at JMH was a part of my journey.
