Is it Mars or the Moon?
It was 11pm, CT when I took this picture with my iphone in Austin Lakeway, Texas last night (just in case you were wondering what I used to capture the image). I knew that there would be a Lunar Eclipse however I didn't expect the moon to look like Mars once the Earth had completely blocked the light from the sun.
The Moon appeared to darken from left to right and the last quarter of it took a very short time. I'd expected to begin to see light almost as fast as it disappeared however that didn't happen... it took hours before the Moon gradually began to brighten again.
Last night was a perfect night to go outside and observe this phenomenon in the night sky. The temperature was in the low to mid 80's and the sky was clear with just a touch of humidity in the air. Weather here in the Austin Lakeway Hill Country is conducive to nighttime planet and stargazing almost all year around. I like to just pull out a lounge chair, recline and stare up. It's like a home planetarium.
