Kathy Streib and Carol Williams are sponsoring a challenge this month, Getting to Know You. Our job is to share the answers to 21 questions. And so, here we go:
1. What was your first job and what did you learn from it?
The very first job I had was babysitting which started at age 12 or 13. I remember after one baby-sitting job, my dad’s tipsy friend gave me a $20 tip and told me not to tell my dad. $20 was a lot at the time. I learned tipsy people could tip well. haha.
My first “real” job was doing cashier work at a department store at age 16. As a very shy person, it took me quite a while to be able to talk to people on my register line. Somehow I eventually became head cashier. Many years later a fellow cashier told me I would get on the loud speaker and say in a sultry breathy voice something like, “men’s wear, register 3, now please…” I honestly do not remember doing that.
2. How long have you been in the real estate or related service industry?
I have been licensed in the real estate industry 12 years, since 2010. I didn’t really start for real until late 2012. So about 9 years full time.
3. What is your biggest fear and what have you done to try to conquer it?
After thinking about this for quite a while, I must admit, I have no fears that are holding me back from anything I want to do. I used to be incredibly afraid of speaking in public and after years of working at it, am much better. I also am afraid of heights but am not in any great hurry to solve that. I have climbed up a fire tower and am fine on ladders, so maybe it’ll just resolve itself.
4. What would you do if you knew you would not fail?
I can’t answer this. I’m not afraid of failing, so if there’s something I want to try I’d just try it. But I can’t think of anything I want to try that I haven’t. But that changes all the time.
5. What is a habit you would love to eliminate or change?
Again, none. When I have things I need to eliminate or change, I just do it. I don’t do New Year’s Resolutions, because I resolve things all the time whenever I realize I need to.
6. What is your favorite meal (forget about calories or what you shouldn’t eat)
Another one I can’t answer. I love food. I make a ton of different things and love it all - so no favorites. And my “favorite’ meals are all different. I love making pizza, paninis, wild game meals, vegetarian dishes, and more. Also maybe of interest, I gave up desserts about 8 or so years ago and don’t miss sweets at all.
By the way, to explain the featured photo. My husband wanted to take me out for dinner on my last birthday, and I said, no (nicely of course). I told him I'd much rather have a picnic in our back "yard" so he made a chicken dinner and we drove up to an overlook in our side-by-side and had an amazing al fresco meal. Another of my favorites.
7. What is something you wish you’d done?
There is nothing I can think of that I wished I had done but did not do.
8. Who has been most influential in your life?
My dad. He taught me how to use tools, have patience (even though he was not patient himself), how to be determined, how to use a dictionary, how to take chances, how to be independent and more.
(This is a photo of dad before I was even a thought..)
9. What are your favorite business-related books?
I’ve read a lot of business-related and self-improvement books. Just glancing at my bookshelf right now, I have Sizing People Up, 12 Week Year, My Personal Best, Believe It, Average Sucks, The Gift of Fear and more.
10. Other than business books what are your favorite things to read?
Fiction, mostly suspense or mystery. I also love reading my husband’s historical fiction novels. I do NOT like romance books. The woman almost always act weak and stupid (haha) and that does not interest me.
11. What are your top 5 favorite movies?
I cannot remember the names of movies for some reason. I do know I watched Gladiator more than once, but that’s because I got a new sound system and wanted to see how the action scenes sounded. I don’t typically watch movies more than once. Well, I did watch Young Frankenstein several times. Hump? What hump?
12. If I came to visit your city for one day what is the one thing I must do or see?
There is no way to pick one! Go to Glacier National Park or maybe go fly fishing, or float fishing, or kayaking, or skiing, or snow boarding, or skijoring, or lake fishing, or hiking in Jewel Basin, or sit outside and enjoy the beautiful outdoors or… I can’t pick one.
13. If I came to your city to visit for one day what is the one restaurant you would recommend?
My house.
14. If I was going to relocate to your area what advice would you give me that is unique to the area?
You have got to do your research on Internet options. Some areas do not have any good options at all, and if you want to work from home, stream shows, etc., those areas are not the place for you.
15. Do you have any special talents?
Special? Hmm, I don’t know. I love to play my piano and guitar although I haven’t done those with any regularity and don’t think I’m especially talented. I grow vegetables, but so do lots of people. I can’t think of anything I’d call special.
16 Do you have any quirks?
I don’t like liars, is that a quirk? I don’t like when people are waiting on me - it makes me anxious. Is that a quirk? I don’t think I have any real quirks. Oh, maybe the fact that I have a hard time remembering the titles of any books or movies. They just don't stick with me.
17. What is your best character trait?
I’m honest, optimistic, loyal, willing to try things, and have a sense of humor. How’s that?
18. Have you ever done anything you would never do again because it was too hard or too dangerous?
I have not!
19. What is your favorite thing to do in your spare time?
Explore, learn something new, read, hike, do word puzzles, play music, cook, spend time with family.
20. If you could live anywhere in the world where would you want to live?
I’m already living in my answer.
21. What is something that we don’t know about you that would surprise us?
I think I’ve shared this all before, but my grandparents were hoodlums in 1924 and both went to jail for 8 years and then gave birth to my dad 8 1/2 months after they got out of jail. There's a book written about it, and there was also an off-broadway play.
I was deathly afraid of speaking in public when a young adult. It still makes me anxious.
I smoked cigarettes from age 15 to 21.
I play or have played flute, guitar and piano. And of course a recorder and harmonica, but who hasn’t?
I love red wine.
I drank peppermint schnapps as a teenager at a party and can’t even look at it this day without shuddering.
And that's all I can share!
Thanks to Kathy and Carol for hosting this challenge! Reading the responses has been a hoot.
