My High School Mascot was a Potato

Really!

A buss across the street from my home today reminded me of my high school days as potato... err Spud. It was this buss of the Dickinson North Dakota Midgets.

My school was across the boarder in Minnesota. Dickenson is in North Dakota. And then there is another neighboring State, Montana who hosts the Chinok (MT) High Sugarbeeters.

This begs two questions:

#1 Which mascot strikes the most fear in your heart? A potato, a midget, or a sugar beet?

#2 Do you have a mascot in your neighborhood who is more likely to make you laugh then strike fear into your heart?

Just a note about the Dickinson Midgets. Not to long ago some PC people protested it saying it was demeaning. That complaint got CRUSHED. The Dickinson community love their Midgets and no one was going to take that away from them.

Good morning Bob. Sometimes traditions trump being now-a days socially correct. Some make too much of too little and too little of what is really important. It burns me! Enjoy your day.

Hi Bob... I would have thought a potato mascot was more appropriate for a school in Idaho! :))  My schools did not have mascots so I have no real opinion on them.

I agree Wayne Martin and I'm glad the people of Dickinson fought to keep their tradition alive.

I am surprised that there are no petitions out to change the "midget" mascot name for being offensive in the way that other teams have had to change their mascot name because it was supposedly offensive, haha.

I never thought of that before Nina Hollander, Broker . Moorhead MN is a sister city to Fargo ND and sits in the heart of the Red River Valley. The RRV is an amazingly fertile area with the blackest dirt I have ever seen. The number one crop in the are is sugar beets so I'm surprised that a beet wasn't our mascot. The second biggest crop is potatoes. Obviously there were more potato farmers on the school board at the time then there were beet farmers (I guess).

Of course the chants from the opposing teams fans was always "mash those potatoes" and often you would see a fan waving a potato masher. 🙂

There have been Brian England (as stated in my post) and once they even sent people from the Little Peoples Alliance (or something like that) but tradition won over political correctness for a change.

It seems that nothing can be said these days without someone being offended by it, haha.

Bob "RealMan" Timm although I didn't grow up with school mascots, it does sound like they could be the source of lots of good fun!

Very interesting mascots indeed.  When I went to high school in Fairfax, VA our team was the Rebels and Johnny Reb was our mascot.  A civil war era confederate soldier.  I don't need to tell you that in the age we live in, I no longer recognize my high school mascot.  Wait for the day a potato offends someone.  I'm sure it's coming.

Wow Bob - they certainly look fierce enough.  In Armonk we have the Bryam Hills Bobcats.  Of course, Princeton University is the Tiger.

There are a lot of Trojans out there Raymond Henson, eXp Realty and I've seen some pretty cool mascots for them.

Chris Ann Cleland believe it or not my grade school was the Riverside Rebels but our mascot was Pogo dressed up as a confederate soldier.

Those are good names Grant Schneider and if you had not heard me say so before I have tigers and bobcats living within 1,000 feet of me at the Roosevelt Park Zoo (I live outside of the zoo, they live inside, just in case you were wondering 😄).

My first thought was "how long before someone complains about the 'midgets'".  Glad to read the midgets are here to stay!

My high school was the Hornets.  College was Huskies and Golden Rams.  None were particularly imposing except the hornets, I suppose.

Hornets certainly conjure up fear in my mind for sure John Meussner . I have a healthy respect for stinging insects.
