Motivational Monday…Keep It Active

Getting older is not for the faint of heart.  When we first met our friend, one of the first things he told us was that his memory is going. He takes medication for it. However lately, he forgot a few turns here and there and lost his credit card.

One of the things that Larry and I admire about him though is that he continues to want to learn.

It has been a task in recent weeks getting him set up on a laptop…a move away from his desktop. But we’re close to the finish line!

We may never remember all that we’ve learned or even use it. What’s important is that we continue to exercise our minds. Like the muscles in the rest of our body…

Use it or lose it!

This is one of the reasons why I continue to blog and attend the weekly Zoom meetings. I’ve learned about Accessory Dwelling Units and how to create podcasts from the meetings.

I cannot imagine a scenario where I will actively use that knowledge however I learned more than I knew about the topics. That’s a win in my book.

The mind that opens to a new idea never returns to its original size. Albert Einstein

Keeping an active mind has been vital to my survival, as has been maintaining a sense of humor.   Stephen Hawking

The energy or active exercise of the mind constitutes life. Aristotle

Hi Kathy - I can' t imagine doing nothing.  Whatever you don't use you lose.  Always something to learn.  My father was someone who was always experimenting with his computer.  I made a complete backup for him for that purpose.

This is such a great post. Yes, we all get a round trip ticket...it is what we do with the time in between the turnstiles that matters

Kathy, I love learning new things too.   I think that is probably the scariest is thinking you may start having memory issues.

Hello Kathy,  I wish I could learn and retain more but the older I get the harder it is to do some things.  I am still determine to stay sharp in my business and still love to cook.

Agreed, aging is not for the faint of heart, but it sure beats the alternative!

It does take me a little more time to learn new concepts these days, but I do continue to try.

Lawrence "Larry" & Sheila Agranoff. Cell: 631-805-4400 the mind is remarkable. Sometimes life is cruel and no matter what you do, you may experience memory loss, etc.

Wayne Martin I hear you!!!  And it's good to change up what you read. Studies have shown that it helps to learn and try different things to help keep our minds in shape. For example, learning a language or learning to play a different type of card game. And caring for your grandchild will definitely keep you young!

Nina Hollander, Broker excellent point. My friends who never adapted to the computer find it harder for them now, for example.

It is important to continue exercising the brain.  I have used Duolingo the last few years to learn Spanish.  I think it helps a great deal with memory.

One of my favorite tricks about memory (from when I was working in a seniors community) is that old songs can trigger dormant portions of the memory to come alive for a period of time. Even one gentle man that never spoke, would suddenly become connected and start singing whenever "You are my sunshine" was played.

Having lost an aunt to alzheimers, and now seeing my dad decline with the same disease, I appreciate the importance of exercising our minds daily.
