When you blog, how do you know it's working?

Are comments an indication?

Yes and no.

If you're writing to entertain or inform the ActiveRain community, then you MAY gain some comments and you'll know you're reaching your audience.  Earlier in your blogging career while still building up your audience, comments might be few, but they're there and build up over time as you earn an audience.

But if you're writing to attract business from area consumers, comments might be the absolute worst way to gauge the success of your blog.  While it's possible that a home buyer or seller MIGHT leave a comment on your post, in my experience it's not the typical way non-industry readers are going to reach you. 

Instead, it's a text from a buyer you don't know about seeing a house today in the subdivision you posted about years ago.

It's an email detailing future plans for buying a house and what they seek.

It's a phone call with "I found you everywhere when I looked for _______ on the Internet!".

It's another agent with a referral for your market.

It's a call from a title company, a lender or the county health department seeking the HOA property manager contact information for Subdivision X.

It's the request to remove the pictures from a SOLD home listing on your IDX site.

It's the frequent emails soliciting "we can make you #1 on Google!", "can I guest blog?" and the like.

It's getting calls from local school board members and newspapers who found your analysis of home values by school district and the impact of failed school levies.

It's the compounding effect of blog posts, IDX pages, online reviews, Google My Business and other tools you use to increase your overall web presence for "near me" search results.

It's actually seeing your work rank on Page 1 for your long tail search results.

Bottom line, there are many clues, sometimes subtle, sometimes blatant, that your blog is working.  As you gain experience, you learn what works for your local market and your personal style.  You adjust your content to achieve your blogging goals.

When we first started, it was all about the comments.  But comments didn't really make the phone ring, so it took me a bit, but I started to listen to some other Rainers who were getting their phones to ring :)

Over the years I've been able to tie one a customer comment on a blog.  The other times, the phone just rings, or an email comes through and based on the questions I know they've read my blog : )

Hi Bill,
Comments are rarely a good indicator among prospects. During my working days, my blog and website brought 75% of my new business but I got almost no comments. I did get phone calls and emails, though. 😊

I don't think I've ever received an AR comment from a customer. I have received calls and emails from people who read my blogs and have questions/comments. Comments are fun, and they are a way to get to know people in AR better, but they don't seem to bring business from external buyers and sellers.

Bill when I as actively blogging on a daily basis it wasn't for comments if it was a consumer facing topic.  In fact I didn't allow comments as most of it was spammers and that got so annoying. We did rank high for many long tail posts and that's what brought in local folks- neighborhood knowledge and/or market reports.

Well done, Bill! Comments from outside AR (or from consumers on our Wordpress blogs) are rare indeed. I bet I could count on 2 hands the number of consumer comments I've received on AR over the years...but a number of emails and phone calls, and some business. Keeping in mind your goals for blogging will help identify the markers of success. You've certainly shared a great list.

Well done, Bill!  When I started I loved getting comments here because it meant someone was reading my post. I still enjoy the comments as well as the interchange,  However when I did receive calls they came from  referrals from agents I'd met at networking functions and a Google search. 

The comments are nice here because they help to build relationships.

Isn't that the truth Bill.  Comments sure are nice to get but often it's the subdivision posts that make your phone ring, or patio homes or pet-friendly homes.
