May ActiveRain Challenge:  Getting to Know Me. Getting to Know More About Me

The May Challenge for ActiveRain, as offered by Carol Williams and Kathy Streib is an autobiographical post with the offered questions begging to be answered.  With a post of this nature, be wary of what you ask!

♫  Getting to know you, getting to know all about you
Getting to like you, getting to hope you like me
Getting to know you, putting it my way
But nicely
You are precisely
My cup of tea  ♫

  1. What was your first job and what did you learn from it?

At the ripe age of 9, my brother and myself had a summer job of helping our father install storm windows in a cluster of 4 apartment buildings. He did the install and we had the job of bringing him the windows and keeping him supplied with materials. Most of the apartments were occupied by elderly ladies. As the windows were coming in and he installed the frames, they didn't like that the glasses were dirty. They asked if we would wash them and they would pay us, Dad was okay with that as long as we didn't slow him down. At the end of the job, we each banked almost $800. The lesson was hard work can pay and don't be afraid to get your hands dirty.

  1. How long have you been in the real estate or related service industry?

I have been in real estate for 18 years as a second career when I stopped the engineering position I held for almost 38 years.

  1. What is your biggest fear and what have you done to try to conquer it?

I have a fear of heights, and seldom put myself in a position where it can become an issue.  I don't go near the edge and don't look down.

  1. What would you do if you knew you would not fail?

Fear is over rated. Any task I have ever faced was carefully analyzed first and then approached with a plan. If I have done my homework right, failure is defeated.

   5. What is a habit you would love to eliminate or change?

Speaking before my brain has a chance to work.

  1. What is your favorite meal (forget about calories or what you shouldn’t eat)

I enjoy anything that has been cooked on the grill or a well cooked pasta meal.

  1. What is something you wish you’d done?

Focused harder when in school. I found it easy and failed to realize that working a little harder would pay dividends down the road.

  1. Who has been most influential in your life?

Like so many children of parents raised outside of the US, work hard and all things can be achieved.

  1. What are your favorite business-related books?

I backed into my people business world from a design engineering/service background. I read many a book on dealing with people and body language.

As for real estate, I read Everybody Wins, and The Millionaire Real Estate agent

  1. Other than business books what are your favorite things to read?

I like to read what I call historical fiction, as written by Grisham, Ludlum, and Patterson, and Tom Clancy

  1. What are your top 5 favorite movies?

Ben Hur, as It was the first large screen movie we saw, Or any John Wayne, Gary Cooper of Henry Fonda film.

  1. If I came to visit your city for one day what is the one thing I must do or see?

I would enlarge it to my state as we are not that large. Depending on the time of year, we could see the flowers at Elizabeth Park in West Hartford, or the Aquarium in Mystic, Mystic Village. If in the fall, the hills of Litchfield county offer colorful vistas. In the winter we would watch the logs be thrown onto the fireplace in a country tavern.

  1. If I came to your city to visit for one day what is the one restaurant you would recommend?

That would depend on your taste. We have all manner of cuisines and each has their specialties. Italian, Spanish, Mexican, Portuguese, Japanese, Chinese, Jamaican, Thai, Sushi, we have it all and award winning pizza.

♫ Getting to know you
Getting to feel free and easy
When I am with you
Getting to know what to say

  1. If I was going to relocate to your area what advice would you give me that is unique to the area?

Buy on the high side of the road  and clear away the trees along the roadway.

  1. Do you have any special talents?

I have an ear for music and have played in bands since I was 13 years old. I love golf and play regularly, although things aren't what they used to be.

16 Do you have any quirks?

My wife says I might be stubborn, but I find that hard to accept.

  1. What is your best character trait?

I have integrity and am loyal and don't go back on my word.

  1. Have you ever done anything you would never do again because it was too hard or too dangerous?

Once drove a car so hard into a turn that it almost turned over. I learned to use my head and not the lead foot

  1. What is your favorite thing to do in your spare time?

I play golf and hold a handicap of 12.

  1. If you could live anywhere in the world where would you want to live?

I would want to live where the weather was less cold than New England as the older I get the less tolerance I have for cold. But we stay close to family.

  1. What is something that we don’t know about you that would surprise us?

With me, what you see is what you get so there are very few surprises left.

♫ Haven't you noticed
Suddenly I'm bright and breezy?
Because of all the beautiful and new
Things I'm learning about you
Day by day

Good morning, Ed... reading your answers, I realized just how many Rainers seem to be afraid of heights. I'm not one of them. I love heights. I'm with you on a good meal of pasta... and I knew about your love for golf but learning about you and music was new to me!

Good morning Ed. Well, if I could not fail I would take up golf again. So I envy your game. Pasta is good but I still favor the BLT. As for stubborn your wife and my wife are on the same page. Thanks for participating. Enjoy your day.

A handicap of 12 is pretty good!  Not good enough to get you on tour, but good enough to where you likely don't lose money in games with your friends.

Good morning Ed.
Thank you for letting me get to know you, getting to know all about you

You know we share a love of golf. My lowest handicap was a 13 a couple of years ago. It's going up this year. I'm hoping that's because I had a couple of early bad games this year The weather just hasn't been good enough to play much.  I hope that's it anyway and not because I'm getting older.  LOL

Hi Ed.

Great read!  I love your answer to 16 (stubbornness)!  Couldn't agree more with number 1.  Hard work does pay off.  I hope the younger generations start to figure this out.  Making Tik-Tok videos doesn't cut it in my book. Haha!

Hi Ed I didn't know you played in bands - that's interesting! And what an adorable shot that was of you playing the accordion at age 11 - and winning 1st place.  Impressive.  But of course I've always been impressed of you and you have a quick wit and speak your mind!  FORE!

Ed- I was so happy to read your post. Your father taught you and your brother well.  You learned what I fear what some of our young people are not getting the chance to learn...hard work and not being afraid to get your hands dirty can pay off.

That photo of you and the accordion brought a smile to my face, Ed.  When I was a kid, so many of my friends took lessons on that instrument.

Ed Silva - I enjoyed getting to know you better by reading all about your Q&A. You are a vital member of ActiveRain and always supportive. I noticed a long time ago, some of the comments you left showed me that you read to understand and many of your comments resonate with the story provided and/or with how I feel.

Ah ha! I read all about you with interest, especially about having an ear for music and playing in a band for a great part of your lifetime. This was the first time I thought about my piano tuner who had a great ear to tune correctly. He was also a teacher in my children's elementary school. He was voted the most beloved teacher because he had an ear to hear and listen what students said and always made sure kids were learning what they needed to learn. I believe you do too!
