May ActiveRain Challenge: Getting to Know Me. Getting to Know More About Me
The May Challenge for ActiveRain, as offered by Carol Williams and Kathy Streib is an autobiographical post with the offered questions begging to be answered. With a post of this nature, be wary of what you ask!
♫ Getting to know you, getting to know all about you
Getting to like you, getting to hope you like me
Getting to know you, putting it my way
But nicely
You are precisely
My cup of tea ♫
- What was your first job and what did you learn from it?
At the ripe age of 9, my brother and myself had a summer job of helping our father install storm windows in a cluster of 4 apartment buildings. He did the install and we had the job of bringing him the windows and keeping him supplied with materials. Most of the apartments were occupied by elderly ladies. As the windows were coming in and he installed the frames, they didn't like that the glasses were dirty. They asked if we would wash them and they would pay us, Dad was okay with that as long as we didn't slow him down. At the end of the job, we each banked almost $800. The lesson was hard work can pay and don't be afraid to get your hands dirty.
- How long have you been in the real estate or related service industry?
I have been in real estate for 18 years as a second career when I stopped the engineering position I held for almost 38 years.
- What is your biggest fear and what have you done to try to conquer it?
I have a fear of heights, and seldom put myself in a position where it can become an issue. I don't go near the edge and don't look down.
- What would you do if you knew you would not fail?
Fear is over rated. Any task I have ever faced was carefully analyzed first and then approached with a plan. If I have done my homework right, failure is defeated.

Speaking before my brain has a chance to work.
- What is your favorite meal (forget about calories or what you shouldn’t eat)
I enjoy anything that has been cooked on the grill or a well cooked pasta meal.
- What is something you wish you’d done?
Focused harder when in school. I found it easy and failed to realize that working a little harder would pay dividends down the road.
- Who has been most influential in your life?
Like so many children of parents raised outside of the US, work hard and all things can be achieved.
- What are your favorite business-related books?
I backed into my people business world from a design engineering/service background. I read many a book on dealing with people and body language.
As for real estate, I read Everybody Wins, and The Millionaire Real Estate agent

- What are your top 5 favorite movies?
Ben Hur, as It was the first large screen movie we saw, Or any John Wayne, Gary Cooper of Henry Fonda film.
- If I came to visit your city for one day what is the one thing I must do or see?
I would enlarge it to my state as we are not that large. Depending on the time of year, we could see the flowers at Elizabeth Park in West Hartford, or the Aquarium in Mystic, Mystic Village. If in the fall, the hills of Litchfield county offer colorful vistas. In the winter we would watch the logs be thrown onto the fireplace in a country tavern.
- If I came to your city to visit for one day what is the one restaurant you would recommend?
That would depend on your taste. We have all manner of cuisines and each has their specialties. Italian, Spanish, Mexican, Portuguese, Japanese, Chinese, Jamaican, Thai, Sushi, we have it all and award winning pizza.
♫ Getting to know you
Getting to feel free and easy

My wife says I might be stubborn, but I find that hard to accept.
- What is your best character trait?
I have integrity and am loyal and don't go back on my word.

- If you could live anywhere in the world where would you want to live?
I would want to live where the weather was less cold than New England as the older I get the less tolerance I have for cold. But we stay close to family.
- What is something that we don’t know about you that would surprise us?
With me, what you see is what you get so there are very few surprises left.
♫ Haven't you noticed
Suddenly I'm bright and breezy?
Because of all the beautiful and new
Things I'm learning about you
Day by day ♫
