May I Have The Definition?

There is certainly a lot going on in our world these days but a glimpse of an announcement that the 2022 Scripps National Spelling Bee was going to be broadcast yesterday caught my attention.  In recent years I remember it had been televised  on ESPN but this year the viewing venue was changed so finding it took some pre-planning (perhaps a different sporting event in itself?).   Television-watching has become so complicated, right?  Or so it seems. I digress. Not to get off the subject, focus is important after all. In spelling bees and elsewhere in life. . .

The competition did not fail to impress me.  As usual.  The suspense.  The intrigue.  The twists, those turns.  Along with the back stories that make any tale a bit more watchable, I was happy for this diversion.  After all, I have long enjoyed words and wordplay is certainly a part of that.   That said, isn't effective communication a part of any successful connection? Something to consider. . .

Congratulations to champion Harini Logan and the other spellers who participated.

Endre Barath, Jr. - wow that is rather cool.

Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP - Texas was well-represented this year.  You could certainly put your state pride on display with your own words about the event.

Nina Hollander, Broker - I don't know why this "bee" has captured my attention.  And it has extended beyond that stage to seeing the play The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee in multiple cities (not as the reason, mind you) and the documentary Spellbound which is not to be confused with the Hitchcock classic by the same name.

Kat Palmiotti - I know what you mean.  The process of elimination would have much quicker for me.

Michael Jacobs hi Michael... I think we have HBO on our cable plan (goes to show you how I often I watch TV). I will check out Spellbound.... my kind of documentary.

Congrats to Harini Logan for winning the spelling bee!  Those kids are so impressive, they spell words that I have never heard of before, haha.

Michael, I had not heard it was going to air either, would have liked to watch it.   You are very clever when it comes to vocabulary.

I'm not sure I've ever watched a spelling bee. I'm sure if I "played along" I wouldn't make it very far in the competition. LOL

Nina Hollander, Broker - when you "find" the documentary I hope you enjoy it.  I don't recall seeing it after seeing in the theater many years ago.  Some things "hold on" as time passes.  Others not so much.   That said, my memories of it are fond though not as clear as they once were.

Brian England - I hear you as the words in the competition were mostly new to me.  And then when the spellers ask questions of the bee-leader (I am sure there is a name for this position but I don't know it) I became more "lost".

Joan Cox - that's very kind of you to say but Thursday night reinforced that I am a bit of a slackard of sorts.

Sharon Tara - I know what you mean.   Viewing the competition is humbling to say the least.

I like thinking of them as the bee leader, good one Michael Jacobs

I was able to catch some of it Michael and those kids are amazing. I like that they asked the meanings and other questions about the words to try and work out the correct spelling of each ~ Totally awesome!

Lawrence "Larry" & Sheila Agranoff. Cell: 631-805-4400 - I think it must be a strategy although I can understand those who consider it a "stall" technique.  It's doubtful that any extra time would help me.  I agree each of their performances (for lack of a better word) is incredible.

Brian England - so you like bee-leader?  It's just one of the titles I considered. . .   Buzz-Meister doesn't seem to work even if you and Wayne Martin might enjoy the "process" during Happy Hour.  🙃

buzz-meister sounds like something we might hear at happy hour or perhaps it is brew-meister, haha.

Good evening Michael. Spell the word! For the most part I can't even pronounce some of the words. In fact, never heard of many, That said, fun to try! Enjoy your evening.

Brian England - either of those two words might be in the running for the name of an adult beverage on special during Happy Hour too.

Wayne Martin - I understand that.

Michael, spelling used to be fun for me, not as much these days.   You are the king of vocabulary.

Joan Cox - it's much easier to check spelling and definitions today.  Doing it through memory (and much studying) like these participants is definitely more difficult.

Smart kids. Spelling is not my greatest skill.

Roy Kelley - it seems some basic spelling and math skills have become a bit "lost" (at least I think that may be true for me at times).  This competition was very much like a sporting event.  I could "sense" a range of emotions.

Okay Michael Jacobs I just have this feeling that I would not stand a chance with you in a game of scrabble... but I'd love to give it a try. 😃

Bob "RealMan" Timm - while I enjoy seeing/hearing about the success stories of the spellers it's not a competition where I would excel.  Not in Scrabble either.  Or likely any game.  On or off the "board".

Hi Michael Jacobs I have seen bits of past spelling bees and I quickly realized that there is no way I could compete with those kids!

Spelling is, and always has been, my Achilles Heal.  I am always amazed that the kids can spell words that I sometimes don't even know how to pronounce.

Thank goodness for spell check!  I used to have a tattered, old dictionary and Thesaurus on my desk at all times.

Jim Patton - in that aspect, this competition was no different.  I continue to be amazed by the skill of the contestants.

Ray Henson - believe me, I understand completely.  And there was a twist to the "bee" this year that was new-to-me.  The competitors seemed to accept the challenge quite well even if they didn't succeed in their quest.
