The Queen’s Jubilee is being celebrated to mark the 70th anniversary of her taking the throne…
Let me just say, time flies when you are having fun. This event reminded me when Diane and I went to Quaglino’s for dinner. The year was 1996, all our Gourmet Foodie friends who have been there suggested, to make reservations for a Midnight Dinner. Yes, those were the days when I could go with Diane to dinner and eat at 10pm or later. Keep in mind, we were a bit younger, and it was not unusual for me to make dinner after 10pm. I even had the nick name of “the midnight chef” but I am digressing.
Quag’s as the locals call it opened in the 1929 and in the 1930’s it was the place to go to see and to be seen and eat a fantastic meal at the same time. The place boasted of Midnight Jazz and a fantastic menu. The Duke of Windsor, her Majesty of the Queen could be seen dining at Quag’s on occasions.
As you can imagine, those of us who have eaten there, this is an experience we will never forget. The idea was to arrive early and experience the great room and absorb the theatrical and glamorous reception area and be momentarily a tourist and a student of history. Then when you get seated continue the experience. I could write a chapter about the history, not just a post. Let me just say this is a restaurant on a grand scale. Quaglino’s has been reborn over the decades, before we had the pleasure of eating there and it has continued to evolve even today.
Those of you who have known me over the years or have read my post know, I have a fantastic food palate. When we go out to dinner, I do not care about the price it is about the value. I have been to fantastic restaurants all over the Globe and I did not mind when the check arrived. On the other hand, when the food and the service was mediocre, I did mind. If the food, the service, and the atmosphere was great I always bought their cookbooks. I used to tell Diane if I only cooked one meal from the cookbook it paid for itself.
So in conclusion in honor of the Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth the Second I will have to ask Diane to look through the cookbook and see what she would like to have for dinner.
