It isn’t often I get requests here on the Soundtrack. Heck I barely get any readers. But recently I got a request from fellow ActiveRainer Kathy Streib for a song from former teenage heartthrob Bobby Rydell. Rydell was one of the hottest recording artists in the early 1960s. His talent extended beyond records into television and even the movies. He played the role of Hugo Peabody in the 1963 film version of Bye Bye Birdie starring Ann-Margret and Dick Van Dyke.
Bobby had a lot of hit singles on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Placing 34 Top 100 hits, ranking him as a Top 5 Billboard artist from his era. His hits included "Wild One" which reached #2, his version of "Volare" which made it to #4, and "Swingin' School" at #5. His last major chart topper was today’s song, "Forget Him", which reached #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 in January 1964.
For trivia buffs. In the Broadway musical and film adaptions of Grease and Grease 2 the high school the characters attended was named "Rydell High", after Bobby Rydell.
Bobby Rydell continued to perform live concerts to admiring crowds worldwide until 2014 when health issues forced him to retire from touring.
Unfortunately, Bobby Rydell died from complications relating to pneumonia April 5, 2022, at the age of 79.
There weren’t a lot of good live videos available of Forget Him, but I found one with great sound. Bobby had a nice deep voice and incredibly good enunciation, so the words are about as clear as any Rock & Roll song I have ever heard.
So, for Kathy Streib and all the Bobby Rydell fans, here is today’s song, Forget Him.
