This weeks 'Old Glory' post came unexpectedly as traveling over the RR tracks, on the overpass, in Naples Idaho. While obviously not properly lit or taken down every sunset I was taken back that someone took the time to place our USA Flag there for everyone to enjoy as crossing over the tracks into Naples Idaho.
Naples Idaho sits between the Selkirk Mountains to the West and the Cabinet Mountains to the East. The Selkirks being part of the Columbia Mountain Range and the Cabinet Mountain Range being part of the Rockies. It is also interesting that at Naples the two ranges squeeze closely together, about 10 to 15 miles from one another, looking much the same as an hour glass if laid on its side.
If you look closely at the lower left hand portion of the flag photo you see a very old building. Look even closer you see 'Naples' written on the side. While not refurbished or updated the old Naples Train Station, long ago abandoned, still stands.
One tends to wonder how in the world Naples Idaho, in the farthest Northern region of Idaho got its name. 'In the World' would be the proper term. Naples Idaho was named for the multitude of Italian immigrants that worked on building the railroads thru the Northern Idaho area in the 1890's.
