Fly With Pride

Fly with Pride. As a past Scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 324 in Bourbonnais, IL, I had a special task teaching all the scouts in our troop the rules and guidelines for raising and lowering a flag, folding and storing the flag, marching and displaying our flag and removing a tattered flag from service. There are very old and historic rules about all of these actions regarding the American flag. Other than the pledge of allegiance, most young people don't really ever look at a flag and for sure don't know or are taught the rules of respect for flag handling. We took this respect very seriously for all troop meeting, campouts, parades or Scout ceremonies. This is a picture of a flag taken at a campout in Galena, IL commemorating General Ulysses S. Grant, a hero of the Civil War.Galena

Love the picture, Scott! When I was a Girl Scout all the rules around how to care for, fly, retire, address the American Flag were inculcated in us... but that was back in the 1950's. I don't believe younger people know much about this these days.

Ole Glory is looking good!  I did cub scouts when I was a kid but wasn't interested in doing boy scouts after that.  Two of my younger brothers seemed to enjoy it though and both became eagle scouts.

Hi Scott - thank you for spending your time with the Boy Scouts and teaching them what sadly is not being taught in our schools. I learned something similar with I was a Girl Scout. We've been to Galena a few times and love it!!!!!

Scott Seaton Jr. Bourbonnais Kankakee IL Home Inspector  your post is so spot on, here in Los Angeles, CA I see some people whose flags are ripped and some do not have the lights on at night to save electricity... ironically these few people are better than those who do not even put their flags out especially on Flag Day... thank you for your participation I am sure Mark Don McInnes, Sandpoint-Idaho will appreciate it, Endre

Scott Seaton Jr. Bourbonnais Kankakee IL Home Inspector - I really like what you chose to write about and was reminded about the lesson plans I created for my girl scout troops in Illinois and how much I learned from my education about the honor and care I was taught for our country and our American Flag. These are lessons worth repeating.
