Ask An Ambassador: What Do You Do Best?

By
Real Estate Agent with Transaction Alliance 513.520.5305 www.LizTour.com SAL.2002007747

Blogging offers many different options to achieve success.  What works for me may not work for you and vice versa since we all bring different skill sets to the table.

I'm analytical by nature (what else would you expect for an engineer/real estate agent?).  I'm also an introvert.  Give me any personality test and they'll almost always place me square in the corner that leaves no doubt that being social is something I can do for the short term, it's not something I can sustain without my mental batteries draining to zero.

So you might guess that methodical blogging might be what works best for me.  I can be very disciplined (despite demands from 9 Chihuahuas and 15 cats) when I have something that MUST be done.

What works best for me and blogging to attract business is staying within my technical skill set:  analyzing my local market and understanding what my target client audience needs and can't find elsewhere.  Posts about patio homes, condos, new construction, tie-ins to long tail IDX searches, those are things I know work for me.  I can be efficient and productive when I stick to what I do best.

There's still a place for the personal (pets, honeybees, flowers, etc.), but for me, those topics are the "extra" and not the core of my posting.

For you, perhaps it's the exact opposite.  Maybe you're an extrovert and you've got the knack for being social and attracting a large following.  You can post about ANYTHING and people will engage with you.  And since they like you and KNOW that you do real estate, they'll give you a chance when it's time to buy or sell a home even if you've never written a market report in your life!  Trust triumphs!

Find what works best for you.  Maybe it's all about the content, maybe it's all about the engagement, or maybe it's a mix of the two in a balance that works for you.

Until next Tuesday, just Ask An Ambassador if you need help,

Bill & Liz aka BLiz

Bill you make such a great point - do what works for ones personality. I am the opposite of you and a true extrovert that makes friends easily and builds trust at the same time.  I'm also very analytical so it's a mix of both worlds that works perfectly for me.

I know there are certain things I'm just not a good fit for.  Staffing a booth at the county fair?  Door knocking?  Networking at a party?  Best for me to grab the keyboard instead.

Door knocking - not on your life - not once - not ever for me either!!  You do what you do and excel at it.

Good evening Bill,

Great post with so much truth. If you know yourself and have tracked where your business comes from you will know what works. Maybe it's all about the content, maybe it's all about the engagement, or maybe it's a mix of the two in a balance that works for you. Discover what works for you and go for it!!

And I definitely know where our business comes from.  Got a spreadsheet for that!

Well said, Bill. There is no one size fits all for blogging or marketing except perhaps consistency. You have to find what works best for you...what you will continue to do, then do it.

No doubt, consistency is a big part of blogging working (or not).

True, what works for me may not work for others. We all have to find our own "wins"

And those wins are out there if we examine our results and make the needed adjustments.

And considering the variety of backgrounds many have prior to real estate work, there's a lot to tap into.

Liz and Bill Spear - I learned long ago after my spouse died what works for you may lead me down the wrong path to failure. Some financial guy (spouse of one of my kids teachers) pulled aside at the funeral and gave me his card. He told me to call him and meet with him in a few days. Because I knew she was a good teacher, I met with him. All I can say is he was not looking out for my best interest but his own.

There's a time and a place, and that guy demonstrated poor judgment (at a minimum).

You can trust me for all your real estate needs!

I love to fix things and am an engineer so I love focusing on that in a real estate fashion.

It's a good skill set to have for our business.  Being able to be rational when it hits the fan is just one perk.

Excellent post Bill!  A deep look in the mirror tells me that I'm an extroverted introvert.  While I love being with people, large gatherings with a lot of people I don't now makes me slightly uncomfortable.  But looking into the "extroverted introvert" there are a lot of us!  I watched a Ted Talks that said, "everyone is an ambivert."    The reason I bring this up at all is that introverts are known for being analytical - like you!   And I'm not entirely comfortable saying I'm that analytical as I know there are others much more analytical than I am.  I do talk quite a bit in group settings when it's a topic I'm familiar, but there are those near me that should be talking even more, but they don't because they are 100% introverts.  Hmmmm....

I think there's a certain amount of adaptation for different moments, whether introvert or extrovert (or anywhere in between).  I can be extroverted under the right circumstances, or maybe for a limited time.  I can enjoy being with friends from the Rain, but at a certain point when the majority are willing to throw back another drink at the bar, I'm ready to head off someplace quiet and recharge :)

I think it's important to understand what our strengths are, as well as those qualities and skills that perhaps need some improvement, and focus on who we are not what we think others want us to be,

I know I'm not for everyone, but typically the wants that do want me have already read enough about us to know they want what we bring to the table.  I'll take clients that value us over the ones that just want a generic agent I'll day long.

I got pulled in a few years ago.  Have no doubt the guy was guilty, but a mistrial because of something the police officer said.

I am an introvert in large groups and an extrovert in small groups.  So not sure how that applies here, but I took a few minutes to think about that.  Writing a blog is always a struggle for me.  I think I take too much time to think about it and the next thing I know I am busy on another project.  .........  suggestions?

Diana, For me it's somewhat methodical if I'm writing consumer based content.  What do they want?  And then give it to them in a way that gives me a chance of gaining business.  I for the most part drifted away from general topics and focused on posts that directly involved homes for sale.  Posts I wrote years ago can still be found (had a consumer contact yesterday from a post from 2015).
