Where Was BOB This Week?

Services for Real Estate Pros with Ward County Notary Services

In school... sort of.

I was in Watertown South Dakota at the Great Plains Lutheran High School for the Dakota-Montana District 51st Biannual  Convention of the Wisconsin  Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS). That's a mouthful isn't it?

I had never been to a synodical convention in all my life and I must say it was a whole lot to take in. First of all there was the facility it self, an amazing campus for High School scholars who wish to serve the Lord with-in the WELS Church. WELS has 25 such High Schools across the United States and just one seminary (collage).

Before I go on here are a few pics of Great Plains LHS where I was all week.

This is the dorm building. What you see is just the face of it. Besides the rooms there are wonderful dining areas, activity areas, and just social gathering areas.

My room, bottom bunk, Not shown are the built in study areas for each student and the bathroom. They were very spacious for a student.

We met in the Gymnasium which is a newer facility BUT that being said there were several new building projects going on.

Below is the area in which we met.

I would guess that all in all the campus sits on about 20 acreas. If you want to know more about Great Plains Lutheran High School I've added a link to the name.

As far as my experience, I can best describe learning about what our church offers as incredible. The WELS offers amazing support to individuals and it's churches. Amazing and incredible are words that came to me many times every single day I was there.

Each church with-in this District meeting had one pastor and one delegate present if possible. My pastor, who is the best pastor I've been served by in 68 years often tells our church: "I have faith that no matter who the church calls (should I leave) you will receive a pastor who thoroughly knows and believes the Bible to be the inerrant word of God".

I learned this week is that his statement is true, of the 50 or so pastors I meet they were all amazing in their knowledge of the word and the great wisdom they had in knowing how to apply it. I also learned that there was nothing cookie cutter about these guys... so many amazing men with diverse talents, skills, and life stories. If our pastor was ever to leave us we will get a whole different person but the same great faith, knowledge, and wisdom as Pastor Walther.

You slept in the dorm huh?!  Did you recognize an old Senior Picture Photo of a GPLHS alumni on the walls anywhere on campus?  Someone that would hardly resemble the likings of a Grace Lutheran Member perhaps? 😊. See you tomorrow friend!

Hi Bob... I was raised in the Missouri Lutheran Synod and educated in Missouri Lutheran schools from first grade through high school. I know that the Missouri Synod remains one of the largest Lutheran Church Synods. Had never heard of the ELS so looked it up and found out it was a merger in 1988 of the American Lutheran Church and the Lutheran Church of America, both of which I was familiar with growing up. By 1988, I had long since switched to the Episcopal Church so no wonder I didn't know about the merger and formation of the ELS.

Good morning Bob. I am sure you will not soon forget your participation. Did you really fit in that dorm bed? Enjoy your day.

Thank you very much, Bob, for sharing this experience.

Several of my family members are very active in their churches and one of my sisters is a minister.

Hi Nina Hollander, Broker . The ELCA is the largest group and are very liberal, twisting and changing God's word as they wish. The Missouri Synod is the 2nd largest Lutheran body and are focused on "Law and Gospel" as all churches should be (considering the Bible to be the "inerrant word of God". The Wisconsin synod is the 3rd largest Lutheran body and are quite close to the Missouri synod but not in union with them. The ELS is a break off of  the Missouri synod from days when it seemed that the LC-MS was going the way of the left.

Bob "RealMan" Timm hi Bob... once I moved over to the Episcopalians, I didn't keep track of all the Lutheran goings on. I do know that a lot of Episcopalian priests were holding services in Lutheran churches in small towns where they didn't have enough ordained Lutheran ministers. To the extend I know anything these days it's from whatever my high school sends me via Facebook.

I did fit in Wayne Martin but it sure didn't allow me much room to "roll around" any. It was about the same width as my sleeping bag.

That is cool Roy Kelley . Your gentle manner would leave me to believe that you believe in "The Golden Rule". Is your sister in the Episcopal church?

No. My sister Lynne E. Kelley is a Baptist minister in Illinois. Your question is interesting because my mother was Episcopalian but my father was Baptist. So, we were raised attending the Baptist church. When I was a kid, I cut the grass at the local Episcopalian church.

Lynne attended graduate school at the University of Chicago.
