I wanted to include at least one song from each decade in this year’s Soundtrack. So, I looked around my music collection for a good 1990s song, but the cupboard was a bit bare.
Some will argue, but for me, Rock & Roll took a step back in the 1990s. Oh, there were bands like Nirvana and Soundgarden that personified the grunge sound. It was rock, but not the same sound I enjoyed listening to. Pop artists like Mariah Carey and George Michael had replaced Rock and Roll on the charts and Hip Hop was staking its claim as Rock & Roll’s replacement. I just wasn’t hearing anything my ears liked.
Then I thought about the music I enjoyed most, and I came back to the Soul music of the 60s & 70s, the Motown sound. The record label Motown was sold to Universal Records, but the Motown sound was still alive and well in the 1990s. One singing group that emulated groups like The Temptations and Smokey Robinson is Boyz II Men. Boyz II Men had numerous #1 hits throughout the 90s.
I chose I’ll Make Love to You as this year’s only Soundtrack song from the 1990s decade. The song was a #1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 for 14 weeks. It won a Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals and a Record of the Year nominee in 1994.
It is a beautiful modern love song, 1990s style.
