Ask An Ambassador: Your Permanent Record

This morning I was working on an Ask An Ambassador post.  I was 400 words in but it just didn't feel right

Factually accurate, yes. 

Valid opinions.

But it just seemed a bit off.  Something about tone wasn't quite what I wanted to I clicked Save to draft and closed the post.  Maybe I'll come back to it and try to get it right, or maybe it never sees the light of day.

In my earlier days I might have pushed through my concern and published the post.  But over the years the realization that ever post, every comment and every question posted and answered here or elsewhere is on our "permanent record".

Sure, we can delete whatever we typed, but is it ever really gone?

Probably not. 

If there's damage to be done, it's been done.

Maybe it's a screen capture, or maybe it's just the memory of what was typed, but there's a good chance that what was posted outlives any deletion attempt.

If you're lucky, maybe you're quick enough to wipe everything before it's seen.

But if you're not lucky, there may be serious damage to your reputation.

I'd prefer not to have to do any explaining to my broker or anyone else.  It's far easier to fill my blog with content that lasts for years and gives me a chance for a home buyer or seller to call me.

At least (most times) when we say something verbally there's just the speaker and the other person.  There are some topics I won't discuss with anyone, much less type what I think and it put it out for general discussion.

The internet can be forever, just a archived copy of something can be found sometimes after being pulled down.  I mean look at what they dig up on politicians even after they have deactivated accounts.

Ahhh, yes. Sometimes the best thing to do is leave the post in draft for a day or two and then recheck to see if it's good to publish. Sometimes the answer is "no."

And once on the Internet, you cannot take it back. Not totally.

I occasionally get the post that I just can't get the tone I want.  With print being a flat medium, it's too easy for something to come off as a rant rather than an object lesson as intended.

Liz and Bill Spear - Whether we like it or not, I think we are all learning that whatever we do there is a "permanent record" of where we've been, what we said, what we did, and how others were impacted by our actions. It may not be apparent immediately that someone was offended, that we spoke or wrote in haste, or made a mistake, but when put in writing or recorded, it is nearly impossible to retract, erase, edit, or deny. Draft may be our only safety net. I like what you said "sometimes the next day just a little tinker can fix it." Those old familiar words, better be safe than sorry are so true!

True, the offense won't always be known.  Sometimes (Facebook in particular) it's the "death of a 1000 cuts".  While no one thing may have been too much, an accumulation of attitude/opinions may be enough for me to declare "enough".

 I am so with you on this one Bill.  If I have a hint of this just doesn't seem right - it's not. Better to sleep on it and deal with it in the morning. Paying attention to that gut is important.

Oh, this is so true, Bill! Thank goodness for draft mode and for the delete button! If something upsets me, I typically wait several hours to respond! In fact, just yesterday I received a nastygram from a buyer who terminated one of my agent's seller's Contract. Now, he wants back in and the seller wants nothing to do with him. I kept that until about an hour ago before I responded. I needed to not say what I REALLY wanted to say.
