'Ole Glory Coast to Coast' ~ PROSPECT HALL

Real Estate Broker/Owner with Mackintosh REALTORS 82894
Prospect Hall is a well-known landmark property that was originally known as "Red Hill" when owned by Daniel Dulaney, a colonial civic leader and member of the Maryland General Assembly in the mid to late 1700s representing Frederick County. The historic mansion sits on one of the highest elevations outside of Frederick City. Construction began around 1787 however the current mansion known as Prospect Hall was probably not completed until 1810. The white, three-story structure, designed in a Greek revival style with additional Federal elements, has a storied past.
The Dulaney family was very involved with the American Revolution as patriots and an acquaintance of General George Washington.  Washington’s horse named Blueskin was raised at Prospect Hall and was also retired here until his death. After Blueskin died the tale told is he was buried on the front lawn near the site of the flag pole and many claim that the spirit of the horse can be heard galloping around the property on George Washington's birthday.

In 1863 the mansion was the site of Union General George G. Meade’s taking command of the Army of the Potomac from General Joseph Hooker three days before the Battle of Gettysburg, under last-minute orders from President Abraham Lincoln. Hooker had been defeated by General Robert E. Lee at the Battle of Chancellorsville, in Virginia, a few weeks prior. General Hooker's spirit has been said to be seen in the main floor library holding his head and looking upset from being relieved of his command.
St. John's Literary Institution moved the high school from downtown Frederick to Prospect Hall in 1958. In 1980, while I was attending high school there, Prospect Hall was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Many years after I graduated the School changed its name to St. Johns Catholic Prep and in 2013 they moved to their current campus in Buckeystown. The mansion was recently sold, currently unoccupied and is awaiting it's next chapter to be written.
Mark Don McInnes, Sandpoint-Idaho and Endre Barath Jr. thank you for hosting the June Challenge it has been fun sharing some of Maryland's early history!

Buzz, you ARE a history buff! Imagine being there and standing in front of a historical building; you know its history.

The black & white drawing (was it an ink drawing?) of the Prospect Hall gives a sense of eeriness as it represents the darkness that creates mystery and makes you wonder what could be lurking around the corner! Or who was wandering inside the building!!

Nevertheless, the drawing, pictures, and history behind them are priceless!! Hats off to you, sir, Professor Buzz!

Aura Alex the pen & ink drawing of PH was done by one of my class mates , he is now a historic architect in London. There is more history lurking around the corner as I just touched on a few highlights in this post.

Buzz Mackintosh - Sharing history over AR is so educational and important. I certainly appreciated this challenge and all the effort put for by you and others here on ActiveRain. It was good for me too. I enjoyed seeing your photographs and learning more about history that wasn't covered in the history books I read in school. Prospect Hall is absolutely amazing and might I add, you are too!

Buzz- I loved reading about Prospect Hall and its rich history. It makes me want to read more about it. When we lived in Leesburg VA for a few years, we used our weekends to visit as many historical sites, especially Civil War battlefields as we could. The ghost stories intrigue me especially since we once took a ghost tour of Leesburg.
