Motivational Monday…Watch That Knee

Do you remember having a physical exam and your doctor tapping just below your knee with a small rubber mallet? They are looking for an involuntary reaction or reflex.

Of course, the doctor makes sure not to be in front of you so they aren’t the recipient of that swift kick.

Today we use the term knee-jerk reaction often when discussing someone’s impulsive response to a situation or comment.

Admittedly, I have been guilty of having knee-jerk reactions. It is something I’m constantly working on.

We have so much information thrown at us these days… false and semi-true, misinformation and fake…conjecture and manipulative…biased and perspective-driven…how are we to know what is real?

And therein lies the rub. So often what we put out there as our opinion is not really based on much. It’s like building a house on a swampy piece of land. If it’s built on nothing, how much is your opinion worth?

Google it…Siri it…Alexa it…Read about it…Take one minute and think  Take the time to learn about the subject matter, not what others or talking heads say you should be thinking.

As you begin the week, here’s something to try if you are like me and sometimes prone to knee-jerk responses, STOP. Unless you are a first responder, surgeon, or flying a plane, there is time to think.

Likely there will be no consequences if you say “let me think about it.”

How little do they see what really is, who frame their hasty judgment upon that which seems. Daniel Webster

The being without an opinion is so painful to human nature that most people will leap to a hasty opinion rather than undergo it. Walter Bagehot
