Old Glory and Memories

By
Real Estate Agent with Wayne M Martin

Final submission to the June challenge by Mark Don McInnes, Sandpoint-Idaho and Endre Barath, Jr. on Old Glory. This was not the flag intended to be used by my final post.

In the 1960's I attended a military school in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. This past weekend we were in Lake Geneva for the wedding of the daughter of life long friends. Sunday morning we took a walk through the town before having lunch at a lakeside restaurant.

As we were walking past the post office, I noticed the flag waving and my mind immediately flooded with memories of so long ago. Why, no idea! So, had to take the photo. Lunch had me out in left field with memories. So I was not a big participant in the table conversation. Wonder if I would have noticed that flag without this month's challenge but that is a pondering for another time.

It was such a simpler time back then and many times I wish for simpler times again. In our current tumultuous times or back then, my respect for the flag continues. Enjoy your day!

Great memories and the flag is always great to look at Wayne. I still remember in elementary school with the flag on the stage in the auditorium and we actually sang the national anthem. When the anthem came to the phrase, "and our flag was still there..." a chill would always go down the back of my neck. Jeff

It seems to be that many today, the chill is of disrespect, yet they tend to stay instead of choosing a country they like better. So sad

Thank you for reactivating some memories of my own Wayne Martin . The challenge has made me see Ole Glory in a renewed sense of awe that I am really appreciating.

So sad we appear to be in the majority today. We likely are not “Joey the United” fans

Beth Atalay - memories are sometime better than the actual event. In this case comparing the 60’s to the world we live in now, is a no brainer. Most people were more civil then and knee jerk reactions were more rare

Good afternoon to you Paul Henderson. Sad so many were sacrificed for politics when we easily could have won the conflict in Vier Nam. So very sad for friends I lost and those who came back and never recovered.

Wayne- I love your post!!! Isn't it interesting how we'll see something that brings back a memory from the past...one that takes us some time to shake?  I am proud to live in an area where it is not uncommon to see our flag flying from homes and businesses.

I too long for the simpler times, when right was right.

Wayne Martin - Everything about this post, especially the ending resonates with me. As for Lake Geneva, I have been there a lot and every time I'm there, I go into a thinking mood and wish for a simpler life and I like to people watch. My son and his family lives very close near by. I do hope the wedding was fun and I hope you get out more with friends. I really liked you story.

Hi Wayne - the Flag with the POW, MIA flag flies at our post office in Armonk.  Also, in today's post I shot the flag in front of the Armonk American Legion Post.

Good morning again, Wayne... loved the sentiment in your post... life did used to be simpler and I also often wish it were still so today. And whatever changes we've lived through, my respect and love for the American flag has not changed, either.

Kathy Streib My response to the sight of that flag was totally unexpected. Suddenly the memories of raising and lowering the flag daily at military school flooded my mind along with many other memories.

Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP I was totally surprised at my reaction the the sight of that flag this time around. I have seen it many times over the years with out a response like that. Having gone to school on the lake for four years was an experience in the 60's. Thanks for you comment.

Wayne Martin - old wounds are never healed. The fact that you acknowledged your feelings due to change from when you were a young man is humbling. The subject that united all of us for this challenge was our American Flag. It hasn't changed, we have.

Grant Schneider I just hope my grandchildren can develop the same respect I have for the flag. The environment today is anything but encouraging. At times stunningly disappointing.

Brian England You and I are going to have people thinking we are lushes. Admirer's of adult libations in moderation, but not lushes. Then again, we could have Candice A. Donofrio be the judge. She will tell it like it is!

Wayne Martin , as with so many this is a special post.  Unexpected sighting of USA Flag most likely usually missed and yet with it came many memories and reflections.  This challenge and entries has brought me rewards far beyond what I ever even considered.  Thank you for your post.  Mark
