Voting and the Flag

     Voting and the Flag.

Today is primary election day in the great state of Illinois. It's been a pretty contentious and unending barrage of political trash ads. They started months ago and just seemed to get nastier and more personal the closer we got to June 28th.

I turned 65 years old this past week and tried to recall any election cycle from years ago that was so hard core nasty. I really can't think of any one in particular but I'm sure there have been some just as vicious and nasty.

As I stood in the voting stall, I was concerned about the future of my four grandchildren with another on the way as well as all the young people of our country. Will there even be a country anywhere close to the one we live in now or will it be torn to pieces by partisan tribal factions.

When I left the Bourbonnais municipal center polling place, I saw the state flag of Illinois and the Stars and Stripes flying under a perfect sun drenched sky and I made a promise to do what ever I can to keep that flag flying over a country my grandchildren can be proud of.

Scott Seaton Jr. Bourbonnais Kankakee IL Home Inspector  being in the same age area as you, I must agree thanks to Social Media, thanks to the Internet people have gotten nastier than in the 70's, 80's to name a few.... I believe this is because it is easy to be a jerk behind the keyboard bit harder to do it face to face..... now with that said Loved your photo of Old Glory please make sure you put a link to Mark Don McInnes, Sandpoint-Idaho  thread, Endre

Scott Seaton Jr. Bourbonnais Kankakee IL Home Inspector - There are many people who feel the same way you do.  Scott, you're not alone. You are the voice of many concerned fathers of children and grandchildren. So many are afraid to speak up because of consequences. Respectfully, what you want for your immediate family is  to protect them and do all that you can to help them grow up with liberty, freedom, and a much better world than what we are experiencing now.

Our loved ones do not need any of us to have a heart attack. I know you already have first hand experience. Stay strong and teach your children well. May peace and good health be with you and your family always.

We voted by mail, in the Maryland primary, over the weekend.

These are challenging times.

I do think the ads and political process in general has become nasty. Although I'm told these kinds of shenanigans have been going on since the first President of the US - it's just now we have methods to hear about it all.

Hi Scott... I totally agree with everything you said in your post. I've more than once said to one of our grands that I'm happy to be old and know I won't live to see the end of all this insanity... but sadly they will need to live through it and hopefully come out for the better at the other end.

Hello Scott - I have been reading about your state (and some others) as they vote in primary races this year.  Politics has likely never been described as "pretty".

Even as a pre-teen, I remember watching the 1968 Democratic election on television in Chicago.  While I know Chicago is much different than the rest of the state, Illinois has quite the "history" and like the subject, has twists and turns.   Just like each of us.

Politics is a nasty business and the reason so many good people choose not to run for office. It would be nice if the campaigns would do away with the mud slinging, but that is just wishful thinking! Have a great 4th of July!🇺🇸

Hello Scott Seaton Jr. Bourbonnais Kankakee IL Home Inspector .  Perhaps the sight of our 'Stars and Stripes' directly out of voting was a silent answer to your unvoiced question.  Trusting it to be so.  Thank you for your participation.  Your entries have been noted.  Mark

Hi Scott- what a fitting post for this challenge and I love your photo!!!  I also love the promise you've made to your grandchildren. It saddens me to see the divide that is going on in this country.

Good morning Scott. As one who was growing up as Richard J Dailey was solidifying political power in Chicago, I can't forget a slogan from the 50's here. "Vote early and vote often, we are counting on you!" !!! Times have changed but voting is more important than ever. Enjoy your day.

This country has to burnout soon on the divisive politics, it gets us nowhere and it sells out the the promise of America. I too worry for my kids and grandchildren. But I also believe our kids will the cause of the change in this generation of politicians that currently act like hypocrites and children. We have a few good ones, thank goodness.

Good evening Scott,

You are not alone as many others are thinking the same thing. Voting is critical now..research and vote for those who will heal this country. Politics has turned into a nasty business and the reason so many good people choose not to run for office. Its time for term limits now more than ever.
