MORE PETS ARE LOST ON JULY 4TH THAN ANY OTHER DAY OF THE YEAR!

How To Keep Your Pets Safe During July 4th Fireworks

We might enjoy the Red, White & Boom of Independence Day celebration fireworks. But your pets ABSOLUTELY DO NOT LOVE FIREWORKS! Dogs and cats are frightened by fireworks, explosions and loud noises. Their first instinct is to run away to safety. Sadly, many of the dogs and cats that escape then can't seem to find their way home and are lost forever. Did you know that July 5th is the day when most pets are reported missing? That's because more pets go missing on July 4th than any other day of the year.

So keep this upcoming Independence Day weekend a "pet-friendly" holiday. And just in case one of your four-legged family member(s) does run away, make sure they have easy-to-spot identification on them. Follow the fireworks safety tips in the infographics below and you're sure to have a paw-some holiday enjoying the fireworks while keeping your fur-babies stress-free.

Your fur-babies will paws-itively appreciate your taking a little bit of extra time to make sure they are safe and secure and away from as much noise as possible. Don't let your pet become a July 4th statistic!

The American Veterinary Medical Association provides more tips to keep your pets safe this weekend that are easy to overlook. These include:

  • Too much sun and heat (and humidity!) can be dangerous to pets and we are expecting some hot and humid weather. Keep your pets inside when it’s extremely hot/humid; make sure they have access to shady spots and plenty of water when outdoors; don’t leave them outside for extended periods in hot weather. Know the signs that a pet may be overheating.

  • After the celebrations, check your yard for fireworks debris before allowing your pets outside to play. Even if you didn’t set off fireworks yourself, debris can make its way into your yard, where curious animals may pick it up to play with or eat.

  • Don't allow your pets near your barbecue grill while it is in use or still hot. And check out the 10 tips to keep your dog safe during a cookout below.

Keep Your Dog Safe at a Cookout

So have a paw-some Independence Day weekend and July 4th. But don't forget about your four-legged companions and about keeping your pets safe during the July 4th celebrations. Don't let carelessness ruin your Independence Day weekend with a lost pet.

Leanne Smith my life style is exactly the opposite of yours. I have a 3,300+ home with a two-car garage on .15 of an acre. If neighbors start shooting off fireworks there's no way to escape.

Dorie Dillard Austin TX hi Dorie... I remember being totally gob-smacked the first time I heard this statistic... and I've done a "reminder" post every year since for the July 4th holidays.

Jeffrey DiMuria 321.223.6253 Waves Realty hi Jeff... both dogs and cats have an amazing sense of hearing... my husband tells me our dog hears my car coming down the street before I even engage the garage door and is already waiting for me to come in.

Nina, this will be Izzi's first 4th of July, and cannot remember how Lucy handled the noises last year.    They probably will go into the basement and get under the couch.

Hi Nina- I am so glad that you are sharing this information!  Our Lady Marie (Brittany) was terribly afraid of loud noises...thunder, fireworks, etc Larry rescued her from a hunting lease where she was kenneled because she was gun-shy. We watched her like a hawk during thunderstorms and july 4th.

Joan Cox hi Joan... Bingo and Mr Marlow don't hide, but they certainly don't like the noise.

I would imagine not, loud random noises have to be scary for them.

Kathy Streib hi Kathy... Bingo is actually quite laid back. He won't go outside when he hears fireworks, but he's not terrified. As for thunderstorms... he just hates rain, period... with or without accompanying noise.

Hi Nina,

What a smart timely post.  I am so glad you posted this and if it saves one family from losing their pet it was all worth it.  (Hopefully, it will remind lots of people of this issue). Sedona does not allow fireworks so it is quiet on the 4th of July and New Year's Eve! This isn't something I would even think about.  BUT, I am so glad you did! Have a wonderful 4th of July weekend.

Sheri Sperry - MCNE® thanks, Sheri. I always figure a reminder like this can't hurt. I expect to be hearing a fair amount of fireworks going off in my neighborhood. People love them and they are easy to buy just over the border in South Carolina.

I had a dog jump over a 4' chain link fence due to 4th of July fireworks.  Ironically, my wife found our dog about 3 miles away about 5 days later.  The dog I have now is old and run down and her hearing will spare her from the fireworks about to start sounding. Keep your pets close and care for the over the next week!

Hi Nina - I know that this is absolutely scary for pets.  Smaller bangs scare them but this is terrifying.  I hope that everyone looks out for theirs and be of the watch for stray pets.

Jim Paulson hi Jim... thankfully you ultimately found your dog unharmed. That would have devastated me. My dogs won't even go out the front door when they hear any kind of fireworks.

Grant Schneider good morning, Grant... terrified is a good word to describe how dogs feel around huge noises... we forget how sensitive their hearing is so noise like that is seriously magnified for them.

Great advice Nina. We're fortunate our dog isn't affected by fireworks but I've heard how others are. I have a nephew who always hated fireworks and was scared of them as a little kid. While you can avoid them by not going to the displays, it is hard to avoid when people shoot them off in your neighborhood.

Carla Freund hi Carla... we had fire crackers going off in the neighborhood last night... neither my dog or cat twitched an ear. I seem to have been the only one annoyed by them!
