Friday Fun…Summer Camp? Sports? How Was Yours Spent??

Summer is definitely in full bloom and kids are loving it!  We’ve seen groups of preteens working out at the parks as part of a school-sponsored summer program.

Kickerillo-Mischer Preserve has fishing, canoeing, and other fun activities as well.  In the early evenings, I love hearing the children on our street out on their bicycles and just having fun.

My mind wandered back to my childhood and what we did in the summer.  We Vacation Bible School for a few weeks.

But what I remembered was the time spent playing or doing something outside. My cousins (who lived nearby) and I played outdoors as long as we could. The kids from down the block also came over.

We often went to the bay to go crabbing or to our beach property for family and friends' picnics. My grandmother made homemade chili for our hotdogs, homemade potato salad, and always a lot of homemade desserts.

So tell us…what do you remember doing in the summer when you were just a kid??

I did not go to any camps as a child... my mother shipped us off to the country for the summer with our grandmother to get away from NYC heat and humidity in the days when AC was not the norm. I hated it... always begged my mother to let me stay with her in the city. Even as a child, I preferred the concrete jungle to the country. (That hasn't changed in my old age, by the way.) 😊

I remember vacation bible school, fishing in the bayous of south Louisiana and playing in the yard with friends until dark.

We created games, and build forts in the back yard and created our own olympics!

I keep hearing of young people today saying they are depressed. I think I would have been depressed sitting in the house all day looking at a phone or video games!

Good morning Kathy. My days off school or vacation were spent working in my Dad's body shop. We lived on a river, so after work I could go boating if we got home early enough. Great times and learned the value of hard work! Enjoy your day.

Hello Kathy - as a child, I remember summer school, pool time and some entrepreneurial experiences of running my own curbside refreshment business.

Kathy, kids are definitely enjoying their summer away from school.  Laura's daughter was in an acting camp, and tonight, we are going to watch the performance.

Hello Kathy, I got to see my childhood neighbor this past week and he is 72 now and we talked about so many things we did as kids, from setting off rockets and fireworks and go carting.

Outdoor time and lots of it is what I remember Kathy. And always looked forward to "Joe The Cream Man" ringing his bells in the early evenings letting us know his truck was there and it was time for dessert!

When I was a kid, my family often had summer vacations at the beach in Duck, North Carolina. My father and some of his friends owned a hilltop house with land that ran from the sound to the ocean.

When my boy was younger I would send him to summer camp each year. He loved it.

Oh man we did so many different things over the summer time!  Mostly I remember living out at our lake home, swimming, boating, fishing, playing volleyball, fish frys - all kind of fun stuff.  I also remember playing 'jacks' with girlfriends on sidewalks.  And traveling quite a lot with my parents.  We saw a lot of the USA which was really cool.

Oh I almost forgot - we also built a stage and put on lots of 'shows' and had lots of kids attend!  That was very fun!

Grant Schneider I agree, it's harder now than you and I grew up. It's just good to see the kids out playing.

Kat Palmiotti I can see why you love Montana!!!!  I remember your story of your dad bringing you a box to put what you needed in and then going away for a week or so car trip!

Brian England Not tennis??? Both of my great-nephews are taking a basketball camp this summer.

Myrl Jeffcoat oh my gosh...I would have screamed as well!!!  I was a Girl Scout and remember my different badges like cooking, sewing, puppetry, and I'm not sure what else.

Basketball has always been my favorite sport!  It sounds like it is your great-nephews favorite sport as well, so I am sure we would get along well.

Nina Hollander, Broker why am I not surprised? LOL, I am a city girl and enjoy limited country time.   Larry opened me up to camping and boating and I love to fish.

faye schubert ditto!!!   My cousins and I made up games to play outside and when we were inside, I built my own doll houses. I'm glad that my niece has her 3 children involved in activities like gymnastics and other sports.

Wayne Martin that's the way it was for many kids when you and I grew up. I had Saturday morning chores and then I went out to play. It was a fun childhood.

Michael Jacobs Ahhhh that is why I make it a point to stop at the outdoor refreshment stands of young people when I can!!!!

Lawrence "Larry" & Sheila Agranoff. Cell: 631-805-4400 oh yes...the favorite part of summer evenings!!! The interesting thing is I like ice cream but not like the other kids did.   But when I heard the familiar sound...I was right there with money in hand.

Roy Kelley that sounds ideal!!! I'll bet you were all outdoors until you were called in.

Jeffrey DiMuria 321.223.6253 Waves Realty I think it's good for children to do that. I went away to Girl Scout camp but not for a week or more.

Anna Banana Kruchten CRS, Phoenix Broker your comment reminded me of some things from my childhood. We didn't build a stage but my cousins and I would put on some kind of show on our porch. I can't even remember what we did.

Kathy lets hope kids take advantage of all the summer fun activities available to them, instead of sitting in the house with their nose buried in their iPhone or iPad.

Kathy,I took advantage of many Boy Scout camps such as aquatic, camping, and marksmanship. In high school I got into Leadership camps, football camps and finally became a camp counselor for the Washington State leadership conference.
