California's Central Coast - Part 1 - Harmony Ca.
We recently took a trip to California's Central Coast for a couple of days. We were experiencing our first real heat wave here in the Central Valley and decided a trip to the much cooler coast would be a good idea. The day time temperatures were going to break 100° for several days in a row. It's not unusual for us to head over to the coast when that happens. While it's over 100° here in the Central Valley it's usually in the 60's on the coast.
California's Central Coast stretches roughly from Santa Cruz in the north to Santa Barbara in the south. This particular trip we visited the area around Morrow Bay in San Luis Obispo county. Our first stop is in Harmony Ca. Harmony is a TINY one block 2.5 acre town with a population of 18. (Yes 18) Harmony was founded in 1869 around the area's dairy industry. The dairy industry eventually transitioned from the Central Coast to the Central Valley where it still thrives today.
If you look closely there are traces of the dairy industry still present in the town of Harmony. The Harmony Valley Creamery still has their famous scoop truck set up in downtown. We enjoyed some of the most delicious ice ever from that scoop truck.
Also in downtown Harmony are the Harmony Glassworks and Harmony Pottery Studio & Gallery. The Harmony Glassworks offers a one of a kind experience in glass art. Be sure to visit the Harmony Glassworks and watch the glassblower create his art work. The Harmony Pottery Studio showcases the work of over 150 artists. Be sure to check out the Central Coast's most unique collection of ceramic art and porcelain jewelry at the Harmony Pottery Studio & Gallery.
Harmony is also a destination for weddings and events. The Harmony Chapel will accommodate approximately 60 people with the surrounding gardens able to hold larger parties. If you are thinking of something a bit bigger you can actually rent the entire town of Harmony.
If you are ever in this part of California's Central Coast heading down Highway 1 stop on in to the town of Harmony. You will not be disappointed!
