Munro Light Installation, Longwood Gardens 2022

Longwood Gardens - Conservatory at Christmas 2021

A beautiful gem lies in wait about 20 minutes from where I live. The lush

gardens with their ever-changing colors, paths that lead past lakes and

ponds into the undergrowth of the forest where treehouses delight,

whispering benches, amazing fountain shows with color and music and fire,

and a fabulous conservatory are just some of the elements to be enjoyed at

Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, PA. While attending a performance

by the Kennett Symphony Orchestra in the outdoor amphitheater a few

weeks ago (they performed Gustav Holst's Jupiter!!!), I approached a

concession cart for a beverage. Though the lemonade looked tempting,

water was what I truly needed, so after my hesitation, the gentleman

handed me the water. As he did so, he smiled and said, "For a woman

who thinks outside the box."

I laughed and said, "Not sure how my indecisiveness generated that

compliment, but thanks!"  "Your nametag," he replied. "You're a Realtor®.

That means you have to think outside the box."

When I was awarded REALTOR® of the Year in 2018, an excellent Realtor®

in my office gifted me with a name tag, emblazoned with my name,

brokerage, and REALTOR® of the Year. She had recently advised all of us

in a mastermind group to wear a nametag. And wear it everywhere.

So I have followed her advice and have been amazed at the conversations

it has generated. Some have resulted in business, some have provided a

means for people to get clarification about the market, some have given

people a chance to vent, and all have been great moments.

Some have even provided unexpected humor.

A woman approached me in a store one day, sort of whispering to me in

that "this will just be between you and me" kind of way.

"Ummm," she hesitated to continue, then cupped her hand above her

mouth, lest anyone else should hear, "I think you forgot that you're wearing

that," as she pointed to my name tag. I'm sure she thought she was rescuing

me from some great embarrassment. I looked down and with my best

Vanna White gesture, grandly placed my hand beneath it and smiled at

her. "Oh, this???" Then the light went on for her and she said, "Ohhhh...

I get it. Realtor®!" She smiled and happily shook her head. "Smart!"

At the moment the gentleman at Longwood declared me to be "outside

the box," I wasn't thinking of myself that way, but aren't we all called to be

that type of thinker in real estate? And if we are, and we have answered the

call to be REALTORS®, doesn't it permeate our lives, helping us think

outside the box in all we do?

I hope it's a successful week for all of us. May we be reminded of our

greatness, especially when we don't see it, and may we find the solutions,

even if they are just outside the box.
