You Have a Choice in These Transformational Times

I was inspired this morning (as I usually am) in our sales meeting. Our Leader teresa recar asked us a question that made me think. What is your choice in these transformational times? I like that word because it conjures up many different things to ponder: technology, choices on how to react to our market, it also reminds me of the transformers my son use to play with. LOL!

We do have a choice on how to react to the transformation of every part of our lives and how it affects us. We can sit on the sidelines and wait for things to get back to normal. But what is normal and will it ever be the same as before? Of course it won’t …..going back is never the same….you would be dead in the water or stagnant. Or do you choose to help by transforming things to the new normal? The pace of transformation is staggering but we can help level things out to help meet our needs and the needs of others. It’s all done through human connection. I promise you it’s not dead!

Just look at the transformation in real estate in how we do business. Remember the thick MLS books that were outdated by the time they were printed and delivered? We faxed contracts. We ran over to our client’s house to get signatures and initials. We had a midnight deadline for our Option period! Who ever thought that was a good idea?

Now with digital signing, our lives have become so much easier. Most clients want to use their phone or iPads for everything: texting, signing and reading their email. The last 2 years have taught us there is an app for everything! Order my groceries and text when I’m there to pick up. Order carryout food, from restaurants, text when I pull in my slot to pick up. Same goes for dry cleaning, drive through pick up for prescriptions, app to order liquor and pick up and the list goes on.

In real estate we try and simplify everything for our clients but the one thing they need most from us is communication and guidance.  We can meet the consumer literally anywhere on their buying and selling journey. The face of Homeownership will continue to change but there will always be one constant: The human connection! It’s the glue that keeps everyone on course and steady throughout the process. This is a relationship business. You can choose to be that glue or sit silently still as the world passes you by!

Never look in the rearview mirror.  Life is ahead of us and every action you take causes a reaction. Real estate is a people business that requires relationship building of trust.  Have a plan and work the plan.  Congrats on your feature Dorie Dillard Austin TX

Hi Dorie, Great reminder! We always have choices. I started in Real Estate after the books. I do recall us all having a key that fit every lockbox. I'm thankful for change!

Hi Dorie,
I had a flashback to my early days in real estate when you mentioned "the books". Why did they even waste the time and money to print those when they were so out of date before delivery to us. I remember the 3 ring binder that we added new listings to and subtracted solds from on a daily basis.

As you say, no matter how the business evolves the human touch will remain a key component to long-term success.

Life changes and so do people.  And yes, communication changes too.  The best part is to go with the flow and be sure to find out from your clients which mode of communication works best for them and be there!  It works for me!  Thanks for sharing this thought provoking blog!

Hi Dorie:

I love this post. Relationships will always form the basis of the real estate business I think, no matter what changes we experience. I particularly liked this point "In real estate we try and simplify everything for our clients but the one thing they need most from us is communication and guidance."

Hi Dorie,

Great post!  Just like death and taxes, the one thing you can expect in our business is change.  As you stated,  if you don't embrace it and decide to sit on the sidelines you will be left behind.

Dorie, Great post. The human agent is the transformation in the client connection, aren't we? Not a Droid or bot brain. But a real life experienced human being tempered by a living soul whereby we can put ourselves in the shoes of our clients and perform in their best interests.  The challenges today just provide greater insights for the tasks at hand.

Hi, Dorie.

I agree that the "human touch" and "relationship" are the pillars of our success. Today, the tools, aka technology we must learn to adapt, are changing.

As part of getting to know new clients, we won't always be the ones giving advice, and we may learn new things from clients. They know where and how to get the required information without our help.

Our firm is taking a contrarian point of view. Our new slogan is the we are "Humanizing the world of Real Estate" . We have all the tools and technology that you will find at the firms that brand themselves as tech firms. Our boutique firm approach is to hire some of the most intelligent people - who are also nice people to work with, that are also collobrative in their approach (we share a tremendous amount of information with each other- as working with a lot of these condos and co-op's requires a great deal of non-public knowledge). Electronic signatures, video tours, etc make the process easier- but these are just a tiny fraction of the potential pain points in the sales process.
