Motivational Monday…Be One if You Want One

There’s something I heard that was so simple and made so much sense…

If you want a good friend, be a good friend.

Good friend???  Several years ago when my good friend learned that Larry was having surgery, she offered to drive down (from Northern VA to FL) just to sit with me. Had she been in FL I would have taken her up on it but that was going above and beyond!)

Want to read some “good friend” stories?

I read that as we go through life the number of real and true friends we have becomes less. Which makes a certain amount of sense. When we are in school and through work, we have a large circle of acquaintances and friends.

But life happens, people move, we have families, interests change and we change.

In fact, did you know that…

*The average American hasn't made a new friend in 5 years

*The average adult has 16 friends

*“The average American has three friends for life, five people they really like and would hang out with one-on-one, and eight people they like but don’t spend time with one-on-one or seek out.

Another interesting tidbit is that 45% of people surveyed would love to make new friends if only they knew how.

So what do you do??

-Don’t say “We need to get together.” Do it! Put it on your calendar.

-Follow your interests! Whatever they may be, seek out others with similar interests, whether it’s cooking, hiking, church, fishing…

-Give of your time. Volunteers are always needed and what better way to meet new friends.

But whatever you decide to do remember that if you want a good friend…be a good friend.

How about a quote about Friends from someone who should know??

Where would you be without friends? The people to pick you up when you need lifting? We come from homes far from perfect, so you end up almost parent and sibling to your friends - your own chosen family. There's nothing like a really loyal, dependable, good friend. Nothing. Jennifer Aniston

We have been doing a lot of work at my dad's rental.  He bought it for his mom years ago.  As I was walking around the house, I saw some markings in the concrete sidewalk.  It said, "The Bob and Ray Show." I do not even remember helping to put the sidewalk in, but there was the proof.  Bob and I did everything together.  I bet I have not talked with him in over 20 years.  We were like brothers.  I need to reach out to him.

Friends go in and out of your life and sometimes it's not easy to keep the friendship going. Very clever adding that "friends" video Kathy!

Interesting statistics Kathy.  And I agree if you want a good friend be a good friend.  We are blessed to have many what I consider good friends and many of us have all known each other for 40 years, some of us for 20 years and others less than 5. It's fun to meet in groups but it's also nice to meet one on one at times.  Last Saturday we had an old friend over for dinner with her new/old flame - it was so much fun!

Hi Kathy,

The quote "if you want a good friend, be a good friend" resonates with me. It just makes sense.  My good friends are like family to me.

Roy Kelley I agree. I'm at that age when your true friends you've known for years are passing away.

I will agree Michael Jacobs it's a bit like giving out to the universe what you want or hope for.

Dorie Dillard Austin TX the stats are interesting. I remember reading many years ago that as you age, you have many acquaintances but fewer true friends.

I agree with you Nina Hollander, Broker I was born and grew up in Houston and ha many friends. But we moved away and were gone off and on for over 30 years. I sometimes wish we could have stayed here  but I also am glad we move where we did and met the friends we did.

Kathy Streib  I just loved your post, when I was growing up my father was a big shot and had hundreds of "friends" then when the regime changed directions they thought he would be out.... he was left with about two handful of friends.... amazingly my father was back in power... and he said those were not my friends... as life went on I realized there are only about two handful who are the "Real Friends" and I am  a firm believer that the rest are just acquaintances.... loved your post, Endre

Our best friends, the ones we hang out the most often with...actually they pretty much are the only ones we hang out with...are our children.

I have four friends from high school that will be friends for life. We only get together a couple times a year but we stay in touch via text regularly.

Love this post Kathy!  Interesting statistics. When I moved to Arizona, I had a few friends from Alabama I stayed in contact with, 2 in Kansas. Since moving here, I've gained a LOT of friends, a lot of whom are in real estate.  Being single in Arizona has paid dividends in friendships :)  Thank you for this post, reminding me how lucky I am to have as many friends!
