IRS Statement Today about Married Couples' Balance Due Notices

The IRS released a statement today that payments for 2021 tax returns were incorrectly applied to joint taxpayer accounts. This means married filing jointly taxpayers. CP 14 notices were mailed out claiming a balance due or showing an incorrect tax liability.

The IRS is advising taxpayers to take no action at the moment. They are currently investigating the problem and working on a solution.

This is a common problem for taxpayers recently. The tax practitioner community has been sounding the alarm about this for some time. It is nice that the IRS is acknowledging the issue, though we will have to wait to see the extent of their full response.
